Why the low score?

The obvious problem with this is that the maker didn't stick close enough to the actual events. But movies are for entertainment, and when writers & directors actually get to making a film, they are going to do everything they can think of to make it more appealing. They will invent extra drama and interactions for characters.

Aside from that though, it is a good drama and deserves at least a 6. Crispin Glover is perfect casting for his part.

It's not that there are necessarily too many liberties with the events, as it is that the movie isn't really about the Donner Party, but one splinter group who tried to make it over the Sierras from the winter camp at Donner Lake.

The Donner Party tale is more epic in scope, and this one is more intimate. Nothing wrong with that, but it's a tad misleading. Even on its own merits, though, the film is mediocre at best.

The war is not meant to be won... it is meant to be continuous.

I had issues with Foster being the main character. Wtf, Foster was not an integral hero at all. Stupid as f**k.
