In the book, You get the impression that he really did although he couldn't remember it clearly.

I just saw this movie and kinda liked it in the same way I enjoy science fiction ...

There's another thread here where several people rant about him,killing the woman - I haven't read the book - but as for the movie - the fact that he was a guy seen leaving after the woman was murdered was purely circumstantial.

The news-byte about her murder implied she was a person involved in a donation campaign - so, she was rather well known - anyone could have killed her - the stalker guy could have been after Eddie trying to kill him and the woman got killed that way - or any number of ways ...

Sort of a missed opportunity to take the movie into some interesting twists by implying some clues that maybe the woman was using the drug and so forth - altho we're allowed to find out the merger-guy had been using ...

Anyway - if Eddie was so smart - he couldve investigated the murder himself and found the truth . . .

In the extended version, its a clearer lead to the notion that its the guy in the tan coat, framing Eddie for Van Loon. I think in the theatrical release, they chopped some parts to add "mystery elements" to the movie.
