Disgusted

The Academy seems to be out of their minds. First they want to pad the Best Picture list to ten films. This sentiment is OK if it is a year with 10 worthy films. If not, why bother.

The dumbest idea is that the Honorary Awards (Thalberg, Hersholt, Career achievement) will no longer be presented on the annual show. They will be presented at a private dinner for 500 people in November. This was done, according to HOLLYWOOD REPORTER & VARIETY, so the telecast could have more clips.

Let me ask a serious question. Is there really anyone who wants to see more clips? Ok, some of the montages in the past have been very good but by the time the Oscars roll around, most people have seen the same clips from the nominated films umpteen times.

Personally, in recent years, I've enjoyed Sidney Lumet, Robert Altman, Ernest Lehman, Stanley Donen & Deborah Kerr almost more than any other part of the show.

If you want clips, go to Blockbuster or Netflix. If this is what the Oscars are coming to, I'd rather spend the evening watching a past ceremony when people like Jack Haley Jr., Dick Dunlap, Allan Carr, and sometimes Gil Cates really knew how to put on a show.

I couldn't agree with you more. In recent years, The Academy Awards have been an promotional vehicle for movies considered popular, or "popular", among audiences. 10 movies up for Best Picture? I can imagine with the 82nd Oscars will be like....

Same here, why couldn't they have had 10 noms last year when there were a bunch of films that people wanted to be nominated?...

I like the idea of 10 nominees assuming that there are 5 additional worthy nominees. They should cap it at ten but not force 10. I think if there were 6 or 7 worthy films then that should suffice not 10. As for the honorary awards not being presented im outraged. That has long been my favorite part of the show.

As I mentioned, this will make for a VERY interesting 82nd Oscars....

Considering the dreck that has turned up in the best picture category with five nominees, I'm actually hopeful that the ten-movie slate will allow for a few more decent films turning up in the lists. Of course, it'll also open the doors to still more mediocrities... but if the odd hidden gem can call itself a best picture nominee, all the better.

The honorary Oscars have been announced. Producer John Calley, Actress Lauren Bacall, and Cinematographer Gordon Willis are getting Oscars. NOT on the Oscar show but at a dinner on Nov. 14th!!

If you're a true movie fan, you'll go to the Academy website and email them about your displeasure at this. I already have and I assured them that on Oscar night, I will be watching Klute and Key Largo instead of a 3 hour show of 'clips'. I could watch E! for that!

Three remarkable people, and Happy Birthday to Lauren Bacall who just turned 85, and they will NOT be recognized with their Oscars on the telecast?!

Wow...I mean...I'll be in the same boat with HelenaHatcheese, I'd rather watch a good movie than a potentially bad TV show.
