There will now be 10 movies in Best Picture category, instead of 5

The Academy Awards are now going to have 10 movies in Best Movie category instead of the standard 5. This should be interesting:

Oscars doubling best-picture nominees to 10

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) -- The Academy Awards are doubling the number of best-picture nominees from five to 10.

Academy President Sid Ganis said at a news conference that the academy's board of governors made the decision to expand the slate. Ganis said the decision will open the field up to more worthy films for the top prize at Hollywood's biggest party.

The change takes effect with next year' Oscars on March 7.

The move is a return to Oscar traditions of the 1930s and '40s, when 10 nominees were common.

Ganis said the board looked at last year's slate of films and decided there was room for more in the top category. "We nominated five, but there were many other great films last year," he said.

This is going to further solidify the Academy as the most inconsequential organization in the world. I contend there AREN'T 10 films of Best Picture quality. With opening to 10, there will be just "popular" films nominated. This is going to make the Oscars the new "People's Choice Award".

Yes, if this were last year, The Dark Knight and Wall-E would have made it. But what about the other three?

For 2009 you'll see The Transformers sequel nowo in the running for Best Pic.

I have doubt myself but the true is you cannot know. It might be a chance also for smaller movies or those that didn´t make it to pre-Oscar season.
Last year, I believe that Revolutionary Road should have been nominated but there was some unkown Reader instead. So it could give a justice to some those overlooked movies. I believe that Up might be nominated. I
It´s only July so we´ll see.

Ten nominees is a stupid idea, limply announced and pitifully argued.
Populism is populism. Movies that change the industry are few and far between.
