Original Screenplay for something based on a play????

Can anybody tell me, how "King's Speech" ended up earning the Original Screenplay Oscar, if Hooper's mother has seen it as a play and hinted him towards it?

It's not based on a play. Seidler wrote the screenplay first, then adapted it for the stage.
