*************SPOILERS*********************

The couple make it to El Salvador. In real life, if Interpol discovered their location, would French police fly there to arrest, or would the French authorities ask the Salvadorian police to arrest and deport? Or would they just drop it as it's not worth the effort(though thinking about it they are both murderers in the eyes of the law).

Anyone know of any similar examples? Actually having just looked on wiki police arrested Kenneth Noye connected with the Brinks Mat robbery in a foreign country.

If they can find them. The police dont know where they were travelling to unless there is clear CCTV at each boarding gate in Liege airport.

If they arrested the bloke who forged the passports and he offered them up for a reduced sentence, assuming he realises he provided a passport to an escaped killer and remembers what name they were given in the forgeries. They could then trace those names where on a flight passenger list in the days after the escape.

The El Salvadorean police would arrest them and France applies for extradition. Once thats cleared the French govt. would send a flight and a few detectives to Salvador to bring them back.

Hey thanks for that. Very informative.

I think at one point someone says something about flying to a country with no extradition treaty, but I can't remember if it's directed at them. It might have been the convict who kept escaping. An excellent film this. I think the performances make it what it is though. The story of ordinary people thrown into a terrible situation could have been overdone but at each point you go along with the decisions they are forced to make. I do wonder if the Hollywood remake will live up to the original. I get the feeling there will be more car chases, etc.

In the American version, the author (Liam Neeson) says to escape to a country with no extradition. Which is why they chose Venezuela. In the French version, he said to find a country with "no French newspapers".

First: there are some differences between the version I saw in the theatre and my DVD. In the theatre version the police man took a postcard from the wall, depicting the church in San Salvador. Hence, country to chich the family had escaped, was soon found out.

As far as I know there are still a handful of countries in the world that have no extradition agreement with other countries, and San Salvador is one of them.

Maybe Burkina Faso is still a further country. But white people in BF would be most visible. In addition, I think there are more French newspapers in BF than in San Salvador.

Like Jemen.

If Julien did his home work then he would have done enough research to pick a country that won't extradite his family to France.
Think about the British bank robbers from the 1960's and Ronnie Biggs.
