Why L.A.

First I would like to say i'm English so i don't know much about the US.
My question is this: Why would they defend L.A. and not San Fransico?
I assume (for some reason) S.F. is a bigger port, making it a more strategic location. Am i right in thinking this? Or are they defending LA simply because LA is a bigger city with a larger population?

Thanks.

reply

Because the movie was partially inspired by the event which took place in 1942,..... in Los Angeles.

Been a while since I've seen this movie, but weren't attacks taking place all over the United States and the world as a whole? I thought the movie was simply showing us one small part of the overall invasion and the response to it.

reply

The initial invasion was staged to 12 locations. Los Angeles and New York were 2 of those!

reply

Assuming the aliens took into account military value. LA is the third largest port city on the west coast and the largest military production on the West coast.

reply

I guess that would make sense but aren't there other military bases that the aliens could have taken control of that were just as powerful?

reply

Yes but Southern California is full of US military bases. Southern California is literally a military city within itself. LA has the most factories for producing military equipment on the West Cost. San Diego used to be the headquarters for the Pacific Fleet and still remains the largest producer of US naval ships on the West.

LA being the third largest port city really doesn't matter as cities like Portland and Seattle see more trade ships than LA. But to destroy LA for the sake of stopping US military production would seriously set back the US in wartime situations.

reply

But how do the the Aliens know L.A is best place strike hardest?
Did they send in advance Scouts/Recon?

And got the impression they were attacking all over the World.
It's just that film focuses on the L.A assault.

The video game says the aliens send recon teams to Earth around the 50's, checking out major cities and which ones to it. As the Aliens themselves want Earth for themselves because of our unique state of water, taking out every major city first would set our species back. As for LA, no one knows. I just pointed out if the Aliens took into account the cities they pick and how they will effect the "U.N. military" should they be destroyed/captured.

reply

yes, why not Grimsby in North East UK?

big blue wobbly thing that mermaids live in.....

reply

The Aliens obviously don't like Yorkshire....or the Danish legacy.

reply

They hated the weather.

They attacked Ireland's Dingle Bay so I'm sure Grimsby could be hit .

If impersonating a Police Officer is an offence, shouldn't actors be imprisoned?

reply

Actually the port of Los Angeles is the largest port in the United States.

reply

followed by Long Beach (if you count it separately as it's ajoined) then New York, then Savannah, GA. http://www.smithsonianmag.com/ideas-innovations/interactive-the-50-lar gest-ports-in-the-world.html

reply

Not true. In terms of tonnage, the largest port is the Port of South Louisiana, then the Port of Houston, Texas, then the Port of New York and New Jersey
Port Newark. The Port of Long Beach is 6th, and the Port of Los Angeles is 9th.

Savannah doesn't come in the list until 20th, which is somewhat galling, as I live in Savannah.

L.A. is where Hollywood is located and it is thus cheaper/simpler to shoot there. So in 9 out of 10 films they put the center of the action there even though it makes no sense plotwise.

Remember how in V the key mothership happened to be the L.A. one ? How convenient.

This phenomenon is part of the suspension of disbelief required to enjoy Hollywood movies.

reply

Well the Idea was there but Ironically enough, it was filmed not in L.A. but in LA (the state) because it was less expensive.

reply

Correct. The movie was mostly shot in Baton Rouge, LA. Check out the blu-ray extras! (I actually bought it on BluRay in steelbook package.)
PS: I'm not from the US, and I loved this movie.

reply

You're right about Hollywood and L.A but why does L.A not make sense plot wise? They're after our water and L.A is a major coastal city. Not to mention that they used the city's extensive network of sewers and storm drains to funnel water back to their ships.

reply

Because where else could they obtain such stunning stock footage shots of nearby Santa Monica Pier??????

If I can remember it properly I think in the early part of the movie (during briefing) it is said that the battles are going on in more than one location. West Coast of US is almost totally lost (including San Francisco).
So they are fighting also in San Francisco, but already lost there.
Los Angeles is considered as the Final stand of West Coast.

EDIT:
I earlier wrote East Coast as a mistake. Now it's corrected to "West Coast".

reply

L.A is west coast and S.F

reply

I made a mistake there.. I obviously meant West Coast, but for some reason wrote "East". I will edit my post accordingly.

reply

...the battles are going on in more than one location.
That's why the movie is called World Invasion: Battle LA, though in my corner of the world it's just called Battle LA.

reply

I'm sure the choice is basically symbolic. L.A. is a kind of most desirable place for living for most of mankind population these days. Hitting Los Angeles is like insulting a sanctity of a new globalized Mecca of popular media culture. You see there are many sanctuaries (not necessary just religious) for many different and particular people. But if we seek for a place which is best known and most advertised around the whole globe - Hollywood and Los Angeles is the sort of "paradise" majority of us would like to be transferred to. So attacking and destroying that sort of global cultural center is supposed to be (symbolically) the hit in the heart of civilization. Of course one could argue with that but I think this is what the creators of the movie meant.

reply

LOL some of you guys are overthinking why LA as a prior poster said its because of the army shooting at unknown objects in the sky in the 40's

reply

Battle of Los Angeles was only one UFO that couldn't be knocked down in early 1942.
