You're going to make a thread like this for every Oscar winner you feel was undeserving, aren't you?

And I didn't. I guess it's all balanced out.

2012 actually has quite a few animated films much better than this one, some of which the Academy wouldn't go near. But such is the existence of the brick headed Academy. Among the actual nominees, Wreck-It Ralph or maybe ParaNorman would have been better choices.

Brave was clearly the best.
Ralph was funny but had little heart.
Paranorman was interesting but ended up being a big mess by the end.

Brave was an average movie. You can argue that Wreck-it-Ralph was too if you want. Oscars should only go to exceptional movies. I know this hasn't been the case in a while now. But I refuse to believe anybody would consider this movie to be exceptional. It was good, but I hated the ending. And the tapestry thing was dumb. But the animation was very good though. And I loved the celtic music.

I totally disagree with the idea that Wreck-It Ralph had little heart. Perhaps you should see it again. There was plenty to like.

We cheered when Brave won. Wreck it Ralph was OK a couple times but we can watch Brave over and over.

It won BEST ANIMATION not best film or best screenplay.
Pixar wins this category a lot because they have been for a long time at the forefront in the development of CGI and they have developed a lot of the primary software that most other film companies use for CGI work.
With Brave they actually upgraded their technology at a basic level which is why they made such a big thing about the hair as that was one of the more visible aspects of the upgrades.
Now look at the way hair is handled in Wreck-it Ralph.
And its not just hair, its visible in all the background work.

With this particular category of Oscar its the technical side of things that feature most, not things like script.

The category is Best Animated Feature, not Best Animation. So other filmmaking aspects of a potential Best Animated Feature winner can also be considered in other categories.

Here is some Disney and Pixar info that shows that their films were not just acknowledged for their animation quality:

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) - The film won a special Oscar for being the first movie-length animated film.

Pinocchio (1940) - Considered one of Disney's most beautifully animated early films. It won Oscars for Best Song (When You Wish Upon a Star) and Original Score.

Beauty and the Beast (1991) - The first animated feature film to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. The Best Animated Feature category was not introduced until 2001. Won Oscars for Best Song (for Beauty and the Beast--the songs Belle and Be Our Guest were also nominated) and Best Original Score. Was also nominated for Best Sound.

Toy Story (1995) - Considered the first computer animated feature film. John Lasseter was given a Special Achievement Oscar. Oscar nominations for Best Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen, Original Song (You've Got a Friend In Me), and Original Score.

Finding Nemo (2003) - Won Oscar for Best Animated Feature, Also nominated for Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Sound Editing.

Ratatouille (2007) - Won Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Also nominated for Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Achievement in Sound Mixing, and Best Achievement in Sound Editing.

Toy Story 3 (2010) - Nominated for both Best Picture and Best Animated Feature, Best Original Song, Best Achievement in Sound Editing, Best Writing-Adapted Screenplay. Won Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song (We Belong Together).

Most people and critics prefer Ralph too, but you'll never know what's going on in the Academy. I've read somewhere that they escape watching animated movies and just check out the plot summary or in this case PIXAR's name on the film's poster.

I kinda think it is all a matter of personal opinion. I personally didn't like Wreck-It-Ralph that much. It was okay but it wasn't one of my favourite Disney movies while my Wifey and I loved Brave and I would put it in my Top 5 favourite Disney movies of all time.
