Keep or Cancel?

Whatever you think of The Philanthropist, this is not a very good outlook on the show's future...

Its not the best show, but I would like at least one more season.

Between costs and ratings, it's outlook has never been good.

Apparently my signature defines who I am... so I made it just this

I didn't actually find the show until the seventh episode, but after watching that one show I spent the next forty minutes hooking my computer to my television (I'm not the most technical person when it come to those things) so I could watch the rest of them on something larger than my laptop. I spent the next six hours catching up only to realize when I came here that the show might be on the verge of being cancelled. I find that in a world filled with 90210 and Gossip Girl that a show like this even if it's not making the studio money hand over fist like those are should be saved. I loved the show and the entire premise of it, and even more I loved the behind the scenes part of the show and the things the show did for the people of the regions that they shot in. I read an interview with James Purefoy where he talked about how they turned someone's home into a hotel room set because the home only had straw mats to sleep on they had to bring in beds and night stands and wardrobes. When production was finished they left the items in the home and were told that something that small had changed that families life. He also talked about how the production built a school in the location in South Africa where they were shooting and the cast and crew helped to build it.
What was the last thing that Heros, or Lost, or any other show did to help someone?

I think everyone should get on board to help save the show. Sign a petition, watch the show, we should do everything we can to save it. For once production is not just taking they are trying to give back and that should be supported in any way that it can be.

The funny thing about doing nothing is you're never quite sure when you're finished.

They need to lose the story telling/ flashback element. It's wither a boring show and someone is hoping that hides the dull. Or it's a great show being made dull by these boring sequences.

reply

it's so sad to see that it will get cancelled... maybe it's because of the global economic climate that makes people want to watch happy and silly shows to cheer them up.... this show is a lot more serious than the office for example...i never watch anything on tv because of the ads...but i still watch this show religiously online...so maybe they could do a webisode thing

A KEEP! BEST SHOW FOR ME!

I don't think the show is sad. It makes one think about the world. It is dealt very cleverly as even when it is very emotional (and yes I do have tears here and there), the tension is quickly removed and there is an optimistic outcome or hope and sometimes it is funny.

cancel... isn't it just a summer show??

didn't the last episode basically wrap up the series??

what else is there?

I agree about the storytelling part, the format isn't perfect, but I can live with it. A small retooling and it would be a kick ass show.

yea but as for the show itself what else can they do with the plot??

didn't he already accomplish his goal?

so what anotehr season would be him going to another country??

I agree with your pov, I also believe that the expositional narrative took too much time. The contrivance of having Purefoy or Williams tell the narrative in flashback did not help to deliver the main plot points to the audience in a really believable way.

Plust the tidy endings (good or bad) did not ring true for me. None of the philanthropic situations that Rist found himself in could ever be tied up so neat, even in an hourly episodic tv series.

I think the premise had some good beginnings, but the writing was not up to the job of telling each story well enough to give the audience its money's worth. This beast was neither one thing or another, but even the uniqueness couldn't save the writing.

I really like the show. I like the main guy and his buddy and I don't even mind Neve Campbell in it.

I like that I learn lots while I watch it too, which is prob why others don't like it lol

Awee they've gotta keep it! I love this show, and there's not very many opportunities to see Jesse L. Martin on TV anymore.

This show has got some of the best actors ever.

reply

Really "Broadwaybabeforever".........you think Neve Campbell is a good
actress? Couldn't get more boring and flat!

This show will be cancelled. James wasted his time and talents on this
one. I only hope he made lots of $$$ so he can stay in England!!! and
persue his REAL acting career!

reply

Neve is still cute...

and i'm sure the other actors can get other jobs...

i just don't know what else tehy can do on the show... just have him go to different countries each season??

reply

I say keep. The storytelling can seem repetitive, but it's always a different viewpoint and the people involved have different opinions towards what is told. My favorite story is the one where Teddy opens an orphanage in memory of his son. My favorite generality of this series are the tones of grey that are about in the world that teaches us lessons and makes us reflect on what we have and what we don't have.

reply

they would have to change the location and at least half the cast...

reply

Keep it, keep it...pleeeeas. It's one of the best out there! I wait for episodes every week. It's so inspiring and touching :-) I'd say give it a chance! Besides James Purefoy so good in it.

reply

i doubt it unless it's a summer only show... wouldn't last in the regular fall/spring...
