Worst American Accent Ever!

For an American Billionaire you'd think they could have gotten a guy who could pull off a half decent American accent. It's hard enough trying to believe he's this big charitable guy, but hearing his obvious British accent makes it even harder for me to believe he's really this charitable American billionaire.

OMG he was supposed to be American? You know, I kept hearing them refer to him as an American to his face (and I saw the passport), and every time I expected him to say, "But I'm not an American."

Just... Wow.

reply

I don't think he's supposed to be American. A Briton with American citizenship perhaps, with a slightly americanized british accent, like Tim Roth in Lie to Me. Personally I prefer British actors in american shows being allowed to keep their accents.

From his Passport:

Surname:         Rist
Given Names:  Theodore Carl
Nationality:      United States of America
Date of Birth:   11 November 1960
Place of Birth:  Devon, Great Britain

And the fact that Sting's Englishman in New York played also hints that there was no mystery that he was/is English.

Could be a naturalized American Citizen, which would make him an American of British birth and upbring. Hence, the British accent. Or maybe his American parents raised him in England.

I don't recall anyone saying he was born in the United States.

The show never said that he's an American. It is refreshing to watch a British actor use his accent on American Television. It's not like Simon Baker in The Mentalist or keen McKidd on Grey's Anatomy that are not using their accent.

reply

House doesn't use his either...

reply

Oh,I forgot about him. And you are right.

For some reason, the accent did not bother me. I just found it hard to believe other things. Who in their right mind goes into the African jungle without water or bug spray or a map?! It's supposed to be based on a real billionaire. Was he really that dense?

reply

I am pretty sure he wasn't supposed to be American from birth. The actor at no point seemed to try to do an American accent. Pretty sure the character is meant to have been born somewhere else.

The truth is that there are tons of Americans that are born or raised abroad. From army brats to thousands of naturalized citizens, doesn't make them less American.

As I pointed out two days ago, he was born in England.
