What was the significance of the robot dinosaur?

It was a gift which he seemed to like however in a later scene he buries it? Didn't really understand this. As a form of rejection of his alleged mother? loss of innocence?

reply

Personally, I interpreted the meaning of those scenes as expressing how Tommy rejects "copies", for the pet was only a robot (only a "copy" of a living dinosaur). This made it all the more difficult for Tommy to later accept his own status as a "copy".

Moreover, I was intrigued by my own subtle and absurd feelings of pity for the robot! We humans are a funny race.

kids like to bury stuff.

Heh, I felt the same way about the dinosaur and was thinking about the same thing, i.e. how odd it is that if we just draw a face on some object, we tend to treat it as alive, associate it with a living creature. Have you seen "Cast away" with Tom Hanks? I remember being on the verge of tears when he lost his "ball-friend", Wilson, in the ocean.

reply

It's okay, Wilson is fine and well, check out his imdb page:

Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it.

reply

Me too! My mom & I were watching this &for some odd reason, we felt a lot of sympathy for the robot being buried. Maybe it's because of that film AI with Haley Joel Osment & his Teddy.

Thanks for explaining. you may be right. He had expressed his dislike for the smell of clones earlier in the movie. So yes this could be it. Oh, and I felt bad for the robot too lol

reply

I took it as a symbolism of 'letting things go once they're gone', like....dinosaurs. Dinosaurs are long extinct, and they'll never be seen again
When Rebecca unburied it and returned it to Tommy 2.0, this symbolized her insistence on forcing the past.

And slightly off topic: that dinosaur toy was creepy, imo

reply

The Dinosaur Toy is actually a real dinosaur toy. It's called "Pleo the Interactive Robotic Dinosaur", cited to be a "scientifically accurate dinosaur."

But this one's eating my popcorn!

reply

The Dino toy is symbolic for Tommy 2. He knows how society around him feels about clones, and also I think on some deep level he's always known something was different about himself and he was symbolically burying the truth about himself. Then we have his "mother" I burying it and returning it to him...equally symbolic of her state of mind and choices.

I remember when those toys first came out. I really wanted one. But a few years back they were $300 USD and I couldn't justify spending that much on a toy. I still think it would be neat to have one though. The website about it was really neat.

reply

I felt sorry for the toy, too, LOL. Made me regret when I was a child and wasn't always nice to my toys. Life's kind of odd like that.

I took it as a way to illustrate that kids can be cruel and boys seem to have a need to break away from this sweet image their mums hold of them and try to hold onto. Loss of innocence too maybe, he was young and sweet and delighted when he first was given it from his mum, then when a bit older with his buddy he is awful with it and she finds out like mums do. Kids can hurt the feelings of their parents this way. Good for her to return it to him restored wordlessly to show that she thought that wasn't nice of him. It was a sweet toy, I thought. She didn't want him to outgrow it or his sweetness with her at that point. A normal mum part of the movie.
