So Lisabeth is a common thief?

Why did Lisabeth steal the money from the Cayman Islands bank accounts? Just because she could? Did she feel that, somehow, she was entitled to that money? This part of the movie I did not understand at all.

reply

Well, why not? If I was in her situation I would have done the same thing, the guy is dead anyway.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.

Exactly. Not to mention, he's the guy that screwed Blomkvist over and the money was obtained illegally, so no one would really go looking for it.

reply

Do I remember this right?...In the book, wasn't she resposible for the guy's death?

reply

She called someone he owed money to and told them where Wennerström was hiding.

reply

actually, as Hans Gruber said in Die Hard, no, she's an uncommon thief!

reply

You wouldn't take the money?

reply

^I'm not a thief, common or otherwise.

reply

I have to say I admire your principles. But I would have done exactly the same as Lisabeth.

Bah, principles, schminciples. I never read the books, but I'm fairly certain Lisbeth is intended to be a morally grey character, not some retarded cliché "Leave it to Beaver" type. An example that springs to mind is that she COULD have saved the Big Baddie in the first movie, but elected to let him burn alive. I would have done the same on both counts, by the way, even without knowing anything about the Big Bad's shenanigans, tomfoolery and hijinx toward women. The only difference would be that I'd have kept a longer distance from the crashed and soon to be immolated vehicle - you can't be too careful about possible shrapnel in the event of an entertaining explosion. In addition, provided I heard his pleas for help, I'd almost certainly not be able to restrain myself from shouting out teasing lines like "I hear you", Help is on the way" or possibly a mercenary "For how much?"

reply

Ummmmm, OK.

Lisbeth has scant respect for the law, and most social conventions and mores. However, she does have a fairly strong sense of morality of her own, and she can be fiercely protective of anyone she forms a connection with. When she realizes that Wennerstrom screwed Blomkvist over, she decided in turn to screw him over by using her hacking skills to help Millenium expose him, and also to hit him where it hurts and steal a lot of money from him.

The movie (the Swedish one that is) kinda shows Lisbeth simply stealing money from him, suggesting that her objective was to steal money, and she chose Wennerstrom because he's a target who 'deserved' it. But I think in the book, and in the American film, she stole money to empty out an overseas account of his, so that he wouldn't be able to pay off some criminal elements who owed him cash, and they in turn killed him (i.e. it was basically a murder by proxy, in a sense). Though I may be a little fuzzy on the details.
