burial scene [SPOILER]

OK, How has noone created a thread on this?

She's shot. 3 times. Such that she's unconscious and then thrown into the grave.

Then, she's buried. While unconscious. And presumably the gargantuan brother did a fine job filling the grave with dirt and tamping it down, since when you bury a body you don't want people finding your newly buried grave.

But somehow, she regains consciousness, does not find her nostrils filled with dirt, has freedom of movement of her arms (ie, they weren't pinned in place by the weight of the earth), and hasn't suffered much from the 3 bullet holes so that she can dig herself out of the grave. even if she were unwounded and conscious she wouldntve been able to dig herself out of a grave like that.

I mean, by that time, the plot had so misled me I'd no idea who was chasing whom, who had killed whom and why, so I didn't much care.

reply

We had a few threads on the subject. Or at least in few threads the subject was discussed.

reply

The reason given in the book, is she is shot with a rather tame, boy scoutish pistol. So of the shots taken, the one to the head knocked her out, but wasn't lethal, and the one into his shoulder, only damaged the movement of one of her arms. And since the dirt hadn't been packed, there was still alot of air within it.

But i agree, without reading the book, you would have no real clue whats going on in this movie. Its rather complex to say the least, mainly since so much is cut out of it.

reply

The dirt appeared very loose and moist which would make it easier for her to breath through and dig out of. She didn't look like she was buried very deep either.

I could see from just watching the movie that the bullets weren't fatal; only the one to the shoulder was incapacitating. People have lived with way more bullets than that. Plus, her young age and physical shape would have helped her a great deal.

reply

I agree, the burial rescue spoiled the movie. Such a scene may be permissible in a comic-book movie such as "Kill Bill 2" but it is inexcusable in a movie with serious pretences such as "TGWPWF".
Anyone who as a kid with their friends buried themselves in sand at their local beach up to their necks will appreciate that it is impossible to dig yourself out. Never mind gunshot wounds.

reply

Also, she was shot in the head.

She might have survived that wound alone, or the burial alone, but those two together...It's a bit much to ask us to buy

Also, any explanation you can give for her justifiably surviving only makes Zala a moron for not making sure she was definitely dead. This series is usually above "The villain is a moron because it makes for easier writing" level.

Absolutely! The grave was shallow with the soil loosely packed when thrown in on her. Zalachenko and Niedermann both thought she'd been finished by the head wound, that fortunately didn't penetrate deeply, so they were understandably lax in the burial arrangements.

reply

This really ruined it for me. It's so far fetched. I am too lazy do do research on people who were actually buried alive and survived by getting themselves out. (and most of them probably weren't shot either) Sounds the story just wanted a really dramatic scene and they could't figure a way to get out of it...but they kept it because the drama is more important than making sense. lol.

I found it rather interesting that she dug herself out with the cigarette holder that MirumWu gave her. Very interesting twist. The book gave a good description of the movement that she had, since they only pushed a little dirt over her. And yes, it was important to note that the gun they used was not capable of doing the damage of others kinds of guns.

reply

I had a problem with the scene but still enjoyed the film. But the grave was not the shallow. It looked to be at least a couple feet deep.

But the biggest problem with the season was she was underground for hours. She was buried at night when it was dark and dug her way out at dawn. I have to believe she would have suffocated in that much time. Perhaps if there was a cloth or something over her face to create an air pocket she could have survived but not with two plus feet of dirt packed or not.

reply

Oh, yeah - the cigarette case - that means she would have had to fish it out of her pocket first, before she could start digging with it. That's likely a lot of arm movement - for an arm surrounded by dirt. And while you're moving the dirt - where does it go?
It didn't ruin the movie for me. It was obvious she would have to dig herself out. But it was disappointing!

reply

Kill bill vol. 2 is more believeble. Beatrix was buied in a box. So when she brock out of the box, the dirt moved. This dosn't meen it would work

reply

Read that scene in the book - makes it a bit more believeable.

reply

No thanks. When I see a movie, I want the movie to do the work. This scene -- along with the notion that Zalla survived being a human marshmallow -- totally ruined it for me, although it became "clear", if you can call it that, that Zalla had, indeed, survived. This was as crappy a sequel as Butterfly Effect 2.

Agree that the time lapse is the most ridiculous thing about the burial scene. It just killed any realism - I was expecting her to turn into a comic book hero at this stage.

Also - her hand coming out of the dirt reminded me of Skeletor's hand at the end of the Masters of the Universe movie.

reply

(humorous response) or maybe she could not feel much pain either, like her half brother or father who survived a burning incident. Must be running in the family.

reply

Doesn't really matter if she could not feel pain or not. The point is that when you're buried alive you suffocate on dirt.

Going to the beach, laying on the sand, then covering yourself up with sand is a whole lot different than digging a hole, getting in the hole, and then getting covered up with dirt.

First, sand is not dirt. If the sand were wet I bet you would find moving to be much more challenging.

Second, a hole in the ground surrounded by hard compact dirt is far less pliable than the open free air when it comes to movement of the dirt/sand after being covered.

reply

[deleted]

No, that's simply all they showed. When they show her digging out, the dirt is up to the top.

It's not 6 feet deep as a normal grave would be (which the mythbusters proved would quickly and harshly kill you)... but it looks to be at least a foot or so deep. Even still, it's pretty unlikely to be survivable.

reply

definitely stupid

reply

Yep, I had a problem with that too but some of the answers here covered it for me.

What I really had a problem with was that they caught her the first time with motion alarms but the second time she was able to get into the barn without any alarms tripping. Huh?

reply

they caught her the first time with motion alarms but the second time she was able to get into the barn without any alarms tripping.

Especially as she worked for a security company in the first film and knew all about camera alarms (she puts them up herself around the cottage, after all). So not to even check for them was a touch unbelievable - as was the digging herself out of the grave after being shot three times by so-called professional killers who very conveniently forgot to check she really was dead. Amateur night all round.

reply

Before burying her, why didn't the killers check to make sure that Lisbeth was actually dead? Whether they found a pulse or not, it would have been wise to shoot her a couple of times in the head in order to be certain. These men (Zala & Niedermann) are supposed to be ruthless killers, so it doesn't make sense that they would assume that their victim was dead.

reply

BINGO. They had a gun. Just pump a few bullets into her face and chest to make sure she's gone. Never did a would-be murder victim benefit from so much sloppy workmanship.

Please put some dashes above your sig line so I won't think it's part of your dumb post.

reply

Yeah, it would've been more believable and realistic if she instead narrowly escaped the attack instead of narrowly escaping from her own grave.

Ignore the trolls! Any failure to do so will only grant them the satisfaction they seek!

reply

This escape made the escape from the grave in Kill Bill 2 seem tame in comparison, because at least that girl wasn't pinned down by dirt, and couldn't potentially suffocate straight away and was only shot with rock salt!

But what do I know, someone contact mythbusters.
