how will time treat Cars 2?

will it always be considered a horrible film, or will it gain somewhat of a better reception as time goes on. I tend to think that there is also a strong bandwagon effect with this film that will be tempered by time. There are already signs of a number of people giving it a second look and lessening the severity of their criticism.

I don't think the film was ever universally hated.....there were some critics who liked it (such as Roger Ebert), and I know I liked it a lot.

Pixar is a victim of its own success. People expect a lot and the cars characters have proven to be polarizing when it comes to adult audiences (unfairly seen as "kid movies" or money grabs in my opinion). Even the first Cars film wasn't as well received as Pixar's predecessors.

Time has proven to be the truest measure of a film's quality, so perhaps the severity and stark polarizing reception will soften over time, but like I said, I don't think it was ever universally hated.

it does feel like it is universally hated. Based on what people say, it is like this is a totally wretched film with no redeeming qualities.

It's a horrible kids' movie. What with guns and adult themes.

This is a movie of the boy in Lasseter loving all the James Bond movies, and spy movies but really it was hard to tone it down.

This is exactly right and why Cars 2 will NEVER become a beloved kids' movie. Cars 2 isn't the only Pixar film to have violence -- the Incredibles has a lot, for example -- but the violence in Cars 2 is pretty graphic and also not balanced out by any kind of compelling kid-friendly storyline. What exactly happens? What do we learn? The movie's message seems to be that with enough high-tech gizmos and implausible crap, even the most stupid blockhead you know can be a hero. Which is a fancy way of saying nothing.

Disney movies are Not just for kids incase you forgot.

film was much better seeing it the 2nd time around. I think it gets better with age. it is such a different film from the first and people was not ready for that and it was a shock when they went to see it.

reply

Yeah, once the rampant hatred is given time to cool down, people will see this isn't a terrible movie.

I just hate how most people treat Cars films like they are the easiest and least-thoughtful films to make.

As someone who watched Cars 2 for the first time today, I thought it was average. My biggest complaint was that it felt like Pixar wanted to make a spy movie, but some executive in a suit told them they had to change the setting to the Cars world to sell more toys.

It isn't considered a horrible film. It's not even hated. People see it as a mediocre or just okay film. That's far from horrible...
