You can't make the comic relief the main character

Once again this movie shows that a comic relief character does not work as the lead of a movie. Part of the reason people don't like this movie is that Mater is too much to be a lead character. He worked fine in Cars because he was used in small doses. The same with Jack Sparrow in the Pirate sequels, he is a fine addition to the cast for them to play off of but he doesn't work as the main character. No one wants to see a movie with R2D2 and C3P0 or Jar Jar as the lead character.

I can't think of a single movie where the comic relief/sidekick character has ever been able to carry a movie. There is a reason they are the comic relief, 2 hours of Mater just makes this movie a chore to sit through despite how good the animation is.

Cars 2 made $560,000,000 so you might be wrong.

Domestically it made 50 million less after 5 years of ticket price increases and 3D tickets sales. So it hasn't done that well plus critically it's the worst reviewed movie Pixar has.

Box office sales may be one of the worst possible metrics to measure the quality of a movie. There are plenty of terrible movies that made piles of cash and just as many great movies that were financial bombs.

No.....where they decided to go with the story - it makes perfect sense to have Mater more or less be the "main" character. It mirrors the fish-out-of-water story of the first film and I found the whole 'North by Northwest'-inspired spy story entertaining.

As I said in another thread......I think more of the "problems" people have with the film is that they saw the mere idea of talking cars as juvenile. The first 'Cars' film was the worst-reviewed Pixar film until that point. Add to the fact that this was a sequel, people instinctually call it a money grab because of the merchandise it sells, the film featured more action and silly humor. The ending has a touch of heart, but certainly isn't as heavy-handed with its emotion as other Pixar films. And people set the Pixar-standard so incredibly high, I feel like the "uppity adult" crowd expects to shed a tear like they did with 'Up' or 'Toy Story 3' or something, rather than just enjoying a funny little action/spy adventure.

I agree with you, a comic relief character is meant to be a forever sidekick. This movie should be considered as a spin-off and should go to direct to video or made for tv movie.

The fact that Matter became the main character, and focus on Lighting didn't exist at all was the main thing that disappointed fans.

Jack Sparrow was always the main character in POtC.

And yes, I would watch a movie about the droids. Name it, "These *are* the droids you're looking for" XD
