Interesting talking about the rise of the Hippie movement. Actually, it was all caused by World War II. When all of the soldiers returned from the war in 1946 and the years following, it caused this sudden, MASSIVE spike in pregnancies here in the US. Twenty years later (the mid 60s), all of these resulting babies were trying to get into college, and integrate into a system that was in no way prepared to handle such a massive influx of people. It reached a crisis level. Here's another point: Back during WWII, millions of women went to work building planes, ships, tanks, etc. (remember Rosie the Riveter?). Once the war was over, many of them never returned home again to the traditional domestic life as wives and mothers. They stayed in the workforce. Time honored values which had sustained society for generations were no longer being taught in US homes anymore because many moms were not there to do it. This caused a domino effect on the foundation of family life here in the US. By the 1960s, the system broke down to a large degree. Thus, the counter-culture and Hippie movements.
