Incredibly long, but earnest, post ahead...
What to do about the third installment? I've been pondering it since the credits rolled that early Friday morning, and again that Friday night. I think I'll give my answer now and explain afterwards. The answer is: Do not make a third film. Quit while you're ahead, Nolan. Go out with a bang, a laugh, and a demented smile.
I can't believe some people suggesting recasting Ledger. I don't care who they get, no one can come close to that performance. I hate recasts. Curse them to hell. More importantly, we've seen the Joker, it was great, and now it's over. We understand him: he lives for the thrill of it, he won't kill Batman, and Batman won't kill him. Thus, there's no where to go with him. He's killed almost everyone important to Batman, he made his point, it's done. We do NOT need to see him again in a third film, regardless of Heath's death. Hell, if Heath were still alive, I wouldn't want him or anyone else to come back as the Joker. It's done, we got it. And this is coming from a die hard Batman, Joker, comic book fan, and movie franchise fanboy. I, just like everyone else, would love more Joker (especially Ledger's Joker), but I'm logical and a realist. Leave it be, please.
Now, do I want to see a third installment from Nolan? Is the Joker a psychopath? Hell yes I want to see another one, but only if it's as good or better than Dark Knight. Unfortunately, I don't think it can be topped. Do you honestly think it can? Seriously? C'mon now. For a movie, where can this deep Batman character go after all that transpired in Dark Knight? For comics, sure, keep going for decades. Fight villain after villain in an endless circle. It's fine. But for a movie with as much depth as the Dark Knight has, it's hard to go further. How many third installments have failed miserably? Godfather III? Passable, but disappointing. Return of the Jedi? Meh, pretty decent, but no Empire (that’s what they’ll say about the third Batman; “Meh, it’s no Dark Knight”). Now, Matrix 3? Fail. Terminator 3? For the love of Connor, don't get me started on how bad it is. Spider-Man 3? *Cries* X-Men 3? *Pukes* How many others? Sure, Return of the King was great, but will we be that lucky? Is it worth the risk? I don't think so. Damn those executives to hell for not letting good things stay finished.
That being said, if Nolan does direct a third, who should the villain(s) be? Well, for starters, I can't believe how many others suggest characters from previous movies. I know, I know, you want to see them done right, the Nolan way. Well, so do I, but be realistic, people. Nicholson didn't ruin the Joker, so Nolan deciding on him wasn't unrealistic. But Arnold sure as sh!t ruined Freeze (he's far too cheesy and supernatural anyway for Nolan's Batman). Redoing the Joker is one thing; redoing a lesser villain is another. Sure, I'd love to see Nolan's take on the Riddler and make him darker and more accurate than Forever's version. But really, he's too close to what the Joker offered in Dark Knight. We don't need another crazy; we've got one, the perfect one, preserved for all time. That means no Mad Hatter, either, no matter how cool it might be. Penguin and Ivy are out, too. For better or worse, they've been done, end of story.
No Catwoman either. She's been done; once relatively decently, and once, well, I won't even speak of that. Even if he did choose her, she's not big enough for the third installment. We have to go bigger, not smaller. We have to TOP the Joker. Selina Kyle, as good a villain as she may be in the comics, doesn't compare to the Joker, and certainly not to the Joker seen in Dark Knight. And we especially don't need her love interest angle. Some of you honestly suggesting a love interest for Nolan’s Batman? Seriously? You want sappy, filler romance? Go watch any of the other films. Nolan used Rachel perfectly. Now she's dead and Batman is distraught over it. That's the way it should be. That's good drama. This Batman doesn't just move on to the next chickadee.
I mentioned Freeze being out for his freeze guns, etc. So, Clayface, Man-Bat, Killer Croc, are all out, too. Sorry, but they don't work for this franchise version. Nolan isn't doing supernatural stuff, and I'm glad. Bane doesn’t work either. He was already super-ruined in Batman and Robin. Although, I won’t rule him out entirely, because I think for the third film, Batman needs to have a big physical fight now that he’s had a taste of the psychological fight with Joker and Ra’s. Nolan’s Batman hasn’t kicked any serious ass yet, so Bane could be that physical challenge aspect, but if chosen, Bane should be accompanied by an incredible psychological challenge for Batman (see below).
Someone said the lesser-known villains won't work because the masses don't know who they are. I don't give a rat's cheese if the public doesn't know who they are, and Nolan doesn't either. Like they knew who Ra's al Ghul and Jonathan Crane were? C'mon, only us fans knew that, but it worked out in the end. Now even my mother knows who the Scarecrow is. So, here are the strongest options in my opinion (I've thought hard about everyone, and seriously, this is basically it, folks):
Black Mask - he's a good character, he's never been seen by the public, and he'd work for Nolan's style.
Hugo Strange - a good psychological character, which is perfect for the condition Batman is in now. After the events with the Joker, losing Rachel and Dent, he's at the bottom of the barrel emotionally. Perfect time for Strange to strike. Furthermore, he knows Bruce Wayne is Batman, and with Batman now hated and on the run, it's perfect fodder for Strange.
The Hangman - fits perfectly with Nolan's take and the current storyline. She's from Dark Victory (a respected book) and relates to The Long Halloween, which is the atmosphere sampled for Dark Knight. Ties into the mob storyline perfectly, Harvey Dent, Carmine Falcone, and killing good cops (now that the weeding out of bad cops can begin after Dark Knight). Maybe a few words with the Scarecrow for what he did?
Talia al Ghul - in a revenge capacity for her father. Not to be used as a love interest!
Harley Quinn - a nice follow-up to the Joker from Dark Knight, but she’s also nothing without the Joker. Still, she doesn't necessarily need him for it to work in a film. She could easily just reference him. Personally, though, I don't want anyone to even attempt casting her. I had my mind made up on how the Joker should behave, talk, and laugh in live action based on reading the comics (luckily Heath effing nailed it). I have it even worse for Harley. The only voice acceptable is that from The Animated Series, her debut. However, I'll allow some license away from that voice since it's more suited to the show and comics. Let Paul Dini and Bruce Timm in on the casting of her and I'll feel better.
Of course, Two-Face can be a villain, but I hope he's dead because I think they've told all there is to tell about him in Dark Knight. Yes, it was brief, but it was a lot. We saw him turn, we saw his downfall, he served his purpose. Quite well I must say.
In the end, there are several things to keep in mind here. Can any villain actually top the Joker? The answer is no. Can Batman actually go anywhere with a villain where he didn't go with the Joker? Possibly, but really, he's gone as far as he can. Maybe the villain in the third installment can be his public image. Bruce Wayne can battle Batman. I'm joking somewhat, but technically that is the logical story at this point. All that's missing is a psychological villain to exploit it. Psychological, not psycho.
Here's what we don't need. A sidekick. No Boy Wonders, please. Yeah, Nightwing can be cool, but that is not consistent with this Batman franchise. No whiney Robins like we've seen. Just don't even attempt it, whiney or not, it's been done and it doesn't work for this. Bottomline, do something NEW and stay away from the old. With the exception of choosing the Joker, Nolan is doing NEW things with Batman, and that's what makes it good. Nolan, Goyer, and Ledger redid the Joker so well that it's like he wasn't even redone at all, but I don't think that will happen with any other previously seen villain.
This town needs an enema!
And I’m gonna give it to ‘em...
