Why was he so reluctant to show the boys his arm in the bowling green building?

Ah, for that really obvious reason that I worked out on my 2nd viewing.

He doesn't want to show the bandages of his wrists that are evidence of his suicide attempt. They're revealed later in the film.

Because he's tried to commit suicide by slitting his wrists. You see the bandages near the end of the film, and what you see at the beginning of the film is him in a psychiatric ward (not the AA as some have stated).
