This film is a Progressive Socialist's Wet Dream

Because the aliens totally CONTROL people just like the Progressives want to because they think they're smarter than us and know better how to run our lives. They're Fascists because they want to run over the Individual and his/her freedom for the good of the masses. They want a Socialist/Fascist Utopia.

Other than that problem I did like the film because I like British humor.

Actually it's about big corporations "starbucking" everywhere, replacing characterful pubs with bland franchises. It's neoliberalism like both of your American political parties.

reply

That was a minor theme, nep.

reply

Not at all. Every pub in the film has been wrecked by being bought by a chain. Even tje Network is a franchise operation between planets.w

It's a funny film, but I think you're all reading a bit too much of the political into the film. The film has philosophical/psychological depth (in terms of our desire to hold on to our youth, and why we should embrace life's imperfections), but I don't think it had a staunch political agenda.

However, I do agree that there was some wry commentary on the bland, sanitised 'starbucking' of our society, and it's also true that it's the neoliberal consensus with its inability to accept any viewpoint that conflicts with social progressivism and free market orthodoxy, that is the problem.

Wasn't it a nightmare then because the aliens failed?

reply

Yes it was, for the Progressives.

I thought it was a just a funny film

I think you've missed the point of the film (but conservatives with an agenda have a tendency to miss the point of things). The film wasn't endorsing the Blanks' agenda. On the contrary. The film was endorsing the way of life of Gary and the rest of us fück-ups.

The aliens are clearly the bad guys. How could that be a socialists wet dream?

They want a Socialist/Fascist Utopia.

Actually, they want to normalise the intellectual/spiritual/moral level of humanity purely for the benefit of already advanced civillisations. The chaos of humanity is holding the aliens back from being even more successful.

It's like when people are fooled into believing that they need to borrow and buy several houses, go on several holidays each year because it's a rung up on the social ladder that you're naturally supposed to climb. All it does is advance the already rich farther than most people will ever reach in their lives.

Well, this progressive is smart enough to know that you have no idea what a progressive is.
