So glad I waited until this came out on HBO

I would have been pissed if I paid admission to be this bored

Yes, very disappointing film. I thought some of the space scenes were well done, but otherwise: minimal dialogue, poor soundtrack, mediocre at best acting. And who was that lady who played his wife? I sure hope the real one wasn't that cold. The whole thing has a Super 8 improvised low budget feel to it. And I can't believe they ended the film that way. I was critical of Apollo 13, but at least it had a big budget feel and some good drama. This was bad all the way around. But both spent too much time on schmaltzy family scenes we really don't care about.

I really enjoyed it at the cinema and I thought Ryan Gosling and Clair Foy were very good. It's an internalised film about a man dealing with loss and huge stress and expectations. So perhaps not the celebration and epic adventure some were expecting - though big screen benefitted the scale of many of the shots.

It portrays Armstrong as a humorless dick. The space capsules are rusted and dirty, like my '59 Ford pickup if it had been sitting in the desert with the windows open for fifty years. The X-15, Gemini, and Apollo flights were so violent and noisy that nobody would have been able to function or communicate. On some level it was entertaining, but it was totally FOS.
