White people hair grows faster than Black people!

Specifically, the average density of Afro-textured hair was found to be approximately 190 hairs per square centimeter. This was significantly lower than that of Caucasian hair, which, on average, produces approximately 227 hairs per square centimeter.[7] Further, Loussourarn found that Afro-textured hair grows at an average rate of approximately 256 micrometers per day, while that of Caucasians grows at approximately 396 micrometers per day.[7]

Gee, I really didn't know that. I just assumed since Black hair is so coarse and prone to breakage, that's why it isn't as long as White hair.

Black women do not grow their hair long because they do not know how to take care of it. I went natural just a year ago (I cut off all my chemically relaxed ends and sported a fade), and my hair is almost shoulder length now. I'm not saying if you have a relaxer you hair can't grow long hair, it's just that many women who have relaxers do not know how take care of their hair in it's relaxed state. Therefore, it breaks easily, and next thing you know your hair has been at shoulder length for the last 5 years.

reply

I went natural and my hair is to my shoulders when I straighten it. I haven't straightened it in a long time so it may be longer than that.

I agree with everything you've stated here.

It kinda depends. I've seen girls around 1-3 years old who use grease, and everything (perm being the exception), and their hair is long. I guess when they get older, their hair doesn't really do as much. It's probably stress.

Black Hair is NOT prone to breakage, nor is it "unmanageable".

It becomes this when you become lazy and look for excuses to relax your hair. I'm a Black man, I've had "natural" hair all my life, whether it was a fade, afro, cornrows, or dreadlocks (which I have currently).

I've never had a relaxer, my hair grows just fine. Black women, stop killing your hair with chemicals for 20+ years and then saying "my hair doesn't grow" well no *beep*

Haha. I have to disagree on that "not prone to breakage" thing. Black hair in general is prone to breakage. Relaxing just makes it worse because most of us have naturally dry hair. Moisturization will fix all your "breakage" and "unmanageable" problems. Thats what most black women don't know.

Im natural and I found out that the more moisture my hair has, the happier it is and the less it breaks. AND it grows at a normal speed without breaking off if I treat it right :).

As for the op, I would have to say it depends on the individual and their genetics, but i don't care if a white person's hair grows faster than mine. I still love my afro :D

Thank you! I love my fro. It is growing and thats all that matters. When I learned how to properly care for my relaxed hair is almost reached my Armpits. I stopped caring for it and I ended up cutting off my relaxer and going natural. My hair grows so much faster and I love it. It's 10x thicker too. I hated my thin relaxed hair. Black hair is very prone to breakage especially in it's natural state. It's all about proper hair care techniques. Which alot of us never recieved growing up.

I love IMDB debates...lol yea I'm nerdy!!!

Yeah, I dont know why these people are saying black hair isn't prone to breakage, uh, yes it is
that's why people get perms in the first place!
duh!
When hair gets to nappy, it's unmanagable and when you try to comb it, it evidently breaks off.
I havent permed my hair in a year and it's wayy thicker
because I stopped dying it.
(well, I usually don't get perms anyway)

Perms aren't the only thing that breaking down black hair,
I hate when people blame it on perm. Chemicals period in anyone's hair can cause damage.(Such as dying or weave....sew ins can tear your hair up too)
It's just black hair is just really coarse and sometimes can;t take the chemicals.

The reason why most white people's hair is longer all has to do with genetics, they have oilier hair which doesn't break off as easy, black hair texture is dryer, and it you don't moisturize it well, it causes it to break off at the roots and ends, thus damaging the hair and preventing it from growing. We come from Africa, one of the hottest continents, so of course our hair is going to be dryer because of the heat. White people with dryer hair tend to have shorter hair as well because it breaks off. It all depends on the amount of oils within your hair. I beleive that hair is a living thing and if you take care of it from birth, and don't do damage to it, it will continue to grow.

Actually, ALL people have terminal legnths due to genetics. It is possible to prolong the legnths with various vitamins and supplements, and healthy diet and lifestyle, but all hair grows when treated right. White people's hair grows no longer or faster than the hair on black people. Not all black people have the same texture either.

All hair is made up of the same thing, hair is hair regardless of the person it grows out of. If you take care of it, it will flourish.

Kinky or tightly curled hair tends to have open cuticles, allowing moisture to leave, thus drying it up. It also lacks a protective barrier, which most people with straight hair(especially asian hair) do have, allowing the hair to grow without as much breakage. People with straight or wavy hair have oilier hair that shines because the cuticle lays flat all the time and is able to hold in oils and moisture.

Everyone is capable of long hair but since kinky hair tends to be more fragile, more care is important.

I tried pre natal pills for skin, hair and nails
and My nail bed was still weak and my hair wasn't doing anything.
And I also experimented with Biotin, but I didn't take it enough to see any results, but I know when I drink loads of water my face and my hair seems more healthier.
But what supplements and vitamins should I take?
I have to admit the brand of pre natal pills I took were CVS brand, so I don't know.

Black people with natural dry kinky hair can't [but can] grow their hair long because: It's dry and breaks off/sheds easier than whites/asians. It's dry cuz it sticks straight out and doesn't stick to the scalp. Brushing is bad for curly hair. Shampoo is bad it strips what little oil blacks naturally have away. Blowdrying/flat ironing drys hair even more. [use heat protection]Drying hair with a towel is bad LOL use a t-shirt or air dry. To combat dryness use a leave in conditioner.

Black people use GREASE!!! Mineral oil and grease block the hair pores. Natural oils like almond shea are good for coating/protecting the hair. The only oils know to penetrate the scalp are coconut oil and palm kernal oil. [correct me if im wrong]

Black people with perms: Black hair is NOT SUPPOSED TO BE BONE STRAIGHT!! That is not our natural hair pattern. Thus if you deviate from that [ie, the 2 textures meeting]it will break off. I feel that you can get a perm. BUT you shouldn't leave/ comb it in 'till it is white girl straight LOL LOOSE CURL IS GOOD! It might even stop the breakage from combing/pulling so much. [less tangle knots]

ALL Hair grows at the same length. 6 in a year if you baby it. White ppl have a much easier time growing their hair that is why it is longer then black girls. Genetics too! If your terminal length is 12 inches..it's 12 inches.

P.S LEAVE IN CONDITIONER IS A BLACK GIRLS BEST FRIEND!

reply

I have a wavy daughter and a curly daughter. I never use a brush on my curly daughter. We only use a pick and leave in conditioner. My wavy daughter, the brush works best to distribute the natural oils. Neither of them get their hair washed everyday. It strips what ever oils you may have leaving the hair drier. Even if you use conditioner. We wash their hair once a week. We also braid it at night which make for easier brushing the next day. Then you don't have to be so forceful.

Hi Sandy

Black women here................my hair grows super fast and I've had it waist length several times. it's not about the growth rate it's about maintenance.

reply

Ha. Why is it that everyone now has waist lenght hair? You and Lauren London I suppose.

reply

anybody can have long hair. some black women dont take care of their hair so it constantly breaks off and they blame it on being black.

reply

The difference is my hair IS my hair and it all cam from MY scalp. I know how to balance moisture so that my hair grows instead of breaks off. And if you have never seen a black woman with REAL waist length hair then you should come out of your cave. Also I have met white women who have bleached and dried out their hair so much that it didn't grow because of breakage. Gwen Stefani talked about this battle once.

reply

Yeah, I read that ages ago. It makes me more depressed to be honest, but at least it confirmed that I wasn't paranoid when I noticed how slowly my hair grows and how scant and fine it naturally is!
Afro hair looks thick cause it's curled so tightly, but as for me, there's nothing of it. It's like a bushy brillo pad on top of my head

Black hair is prone to breakage cause the scalp is usually very naturally dry - I believe the driest of all the races. That's why oiling/greasing is essential esp. in the colder months. Ah, I lost the back of my hair when I didn't some years back ... fun times
It has nothing to do with how curly it is that affects the growth, I don't think, but the condition of the scalp, the diet and the health of the hair shaft itself.
Relaxers and heat can really damage the hair, so factor in insufficent greasing of it, breakage can occur. Seeing more hair on the comb than on your head, *sighs*
Hair growth is on average slower but I've seen people that are fully black (dark and light skinned), with long, natural hair (down their back, not shoulder-length 'long'). It just takes time(for some) and needs ultimate care.

Think of it like a plant that needs to be watered daily or something to grow properly and/or be maintained

Black hair is not coarse, it's actually very fine. White hair is coarser than Black hair and Mongoloid hair is coarser than anyone else's.
