Yeah, I read that ages ago. It makes me more depressed to be honest, but at least it confirmed that I wasn't paranoid when I noticed how slowly my hair grows and how scant and fine it naturally is!
Afro hair looks thick cause it's curled so tightly, but as for me, there's nothing of it. It's like a bushy brillo pad on top of my head
Black hair is prone to breakage cause the scalp is usually very naturally dry - I believe the driest of all the races. That's why oiling/greasing is essential esp. in the colder months. Ah, I lost the back of my hair when I didn't some years back ... fun times
It has nothing to do with how curly it is that affects the growth, I don't think, but the condition of the scalp, the diet and the health of the hair shaft itself.
Relaxers and heat can really damage the hair, so factor in insufficent greasing of it, breakage can occur. Seeing more hair on the comb than on your head, *sighs*
Hair growth is on average slower but I've seen people that are fully black (dark and light skinned), with long, natural hair (down their back, not shoulder-length 'long'). It just takes time(for some) and needs ultimate care.
Think of it like a plant that needs to be watered daily or something to grow properly and/or be maintained
