My Thoughts on The video editing, sound, ETC.

I think the multiple filming combined into one special was a good idea but he should have kept it one performance per joke.

The performance switching in the middle of a joke was kind of distracting. Plus, The sound in Johannesburg was a lot lower quality than NYC and London.

It was like as if he was saying "the SH!T is Bananas" But saying "the" in London, "SH!T is" in NYC and "Bananas" in Johannesburg. - That was kind of distracting

Plus, if he planned to combine these 3 performances as one before he actually filmed each one, he should have worn the same outfit each time.

Plus, I wonder why he changed the name from "NO Apologies" to "Kill The Messenger".

"No Apologies" was an Andrew Dice Clay special back in the 90's and they didn't want to repeat the title. Chris probably didn't know the title was already used.

Agreed. The editing really spoiled this DVD for two reasons.

1) It was very distracting. (esp when switching bet. Jo'Burg and London, and trying to figure out where he was ;) The sound eq. changed between shows. Really bad decision which adds nothing.

2) It made it impersonal for the DVD watcher. We all know good stand-ups have a routine, with some ad-lib and heckle put downs on standby just in case. But when you watch a comic, you want a kind of personal atmosphere, and want to forget it's rehearsed. Great Comics always have this air of spontaneity about them.
However by switching between locations it removes any personal ambience, and reminds you that you aren't there.

Sorry Chris. Someone made a rotten decision. It's probably one I WONT be adding to my DVD collection.

Apparently, it was Rick Rubin's idea. The editing was the most distracting when he would do a physical bit and it was shown three times in a row just to show him doing it in each location. He should have just shown the South Africa concert because the audience was the most responsive, he's wearing the same outifit in the photo shoot and because 20 years ago such a concert wouldn't be possible in that country.

DL Hughley also recently had a special called No Apologies. But No Apologies was the name of Rock's tour and he doesn't always name his specials after the tour.

DL Hughley's special was called "Unapologetic" and it's over 1 year old.

Thanks. I never knew that. Maybe it's because this was the first concert by Chris Rock I actually saw live before I saw on HBO

1 year is still recent but it doesn't matter if it was 20 years ago. He's not gonna title his special something similar to another comic's. Dice had No Apologies, Hughley had Unapologetic. If someone had a special called State of Delirium, people would still say "Didn't Eddie Murphy already do 'Delirious'?"

Bring the Pain and Bigger and Blacker were named after their tours but the tour for Never Scared was called Black Ambition. He planned on calling Bigger and Blacker "I've Got Issues" but he said it sounded to similar to the title of a Richard Lewis special. He strives for originality.

As a black bloke I always thought DL Hughley's routines seem racist and ignorant towards white people. There is something about him I just don't like at all.

The switching was distracting a lot. If he wore the same outfit all the time, it would've been less distracting.
I also agree on the one joke per show thing. I hated how when they would change the joke between shows, they showed him saying the same thing 3 times. It was pretty annoying...

Those were some of the things I didn't like about show.
I still enjoyed it though

I completely agree. The switching was so distracting and the repeating of the lines over and over and was grating on my nerves. :(

OH ! I just thought he was really, really emphasizing his point or just trying to be humorous with the repetition of phrases. I didn't realize they had basically "scratched" his jokes from the three locations for the DVD. It was totally annoying and now even more so knowing they did it intentionally.

i, too, was bothered by the scene switching. It was very, very distracting and pointless.
