Why Knight Rider didn't use vintage Trans Ams

You know, this is a question a lot of fans of the original Knight Rider ask, and you know what? I think this is just the dumbest idea ever. If they made a Knight Rider movie then it might be possible, but on a show you have a more limited budget and Trans Ams aren't exactly a dime-a-dozen.

If the show had been successful(something most people plan on when starting a show) it could've gone on for years and they'd either have to use CGI for every stunt or they'd start running out of money to buy undamaged Trans Ams. The same problem happened in The Dukes of Hazard where they started running out of Chargers they could convincingly dress up as the General Lee(a 69 Dodge Charger) and had to resort to models that weren't always the most convincing, or used in the most convincing ways. Even with CGI they'd eventually run into issues with getting replacement parts for the "hero car" (the physical model they use for close-up shots).

Now I've never been a fan of the classic Trans AM but those of you who are should realize that using a discontinued car for a series that plans for success is rather impractical.

Does anyone else understand this, and if so can you explain it to me?

Why couldn't it have been a 4th gen Firebird with modifications?
Atleast this would've looked better than the Mustang, and it would
still be a Pontiac, staying true to what KITT originally was. :P

If only they had actually made this before Pontiac went belly up. I'm glad someone made one, even if it was a custom job.

Yes, you can get a "classic" Trans-AM for a dime a dozen. Hell, there are a bunch of nerds out there that put their own KITT kits on their classic Trams-AMs. They could have bought a bunch of those and not had to have done any work.

They didn't use a Vintage Trans-AM because they were 25 years old. Who wants to see a 25 year old car, other than fanboys? Besides, that car was destroyed and KITT was put into a new body. It would have been retarded for them to put him back in that model.

I certainly would never expect a classic Trans Am to be used in a revival. But that Mustang was still a lousy idea.

As long as it's Anthony Daniels (Or at least someone who can do a reasonable imitation) and the vehicle form looks suitable, Im more than happy to use a newer model.

William Daniels, Anthony was C3PO.

Ah yes. I stand corrected.

Please pardon me. Otherwise I still stand by my statement.

I agree with you on this one. I personally liked the mustang and had no issue with it at all. It was the idiotic Transformers tech in the series that was just dumb in my eyes.

Why?
Because Ford paid for this commercial.

The fact that no one seems to know if it was a trans am, a firebird, or a camaro really highlights the differences between the two shows.

The original was a show about a super car that happened to be a trans-am/firebird/camaro or w/e. The 2008 was a commercial about a mustang, that happened to be a show.

There's actually a better answer. One of the things about KITT in the original series was not just the fact hat he was the "car of the future", but he was the "car of the future" inside of what appeared to be a normal car. Seriously, how many times was KITT mistaken to be an average car? They even made a running joke of it in the pilot that carried on throughout the show. And in 1982-1985, Trans-Ams were about a dime a dozen on the road (meaning that they were common place). Nowadays, a Trans-Am of any year model is a rare sight to see on the public road. "What does that have to do with anything?" Well, one of the best things about KITT was how common he looked, which means he could tail a bad guy's car without really standing out.

I've seen many people list what they thought that a modern KITT would be. And every one of those cars I've seen suggested are expensive and overly gaudy vehicles. BMWs, Ferraris and Lamberginis. Every single one of those suggestions would stand out like the Empire State Building if it were in a small town. Now, as much as I love the classic KITT (Hell, I have the Kenner KITT and Michael Knight action figure in my collection of vintage toys), nowadays, KITT' would stand out way too much (every time I see an old car, I take notice. One time, I was driving home, looked up and saw and old-school taxi cab behind me).

Now, when it comes to the modern Mustangs, you can't walk five feet without spotting one. Again, this is a good thing if you're tailing a crook or trying to hide or blend into a crowd of vehicles. Because of the fact that there's so many, you wouldn't be notice KITT now, unless if Michael is being completely careless, resulting in a large number of people seeing's KITTs transformations).

That's why the old Trans-Ams aren't used in the show, because it defeats the purpose of KITT looking like an average car (since Trans-Ams aren't averagely seen as much).

But this one's eating my popcorn!

I agree that the Mustang was a good choice for an updated K.I.T.T. simply due to the commonality of the current model Mustang. From what I have read GM was not interested in having one of their vehicles as the new K.I.T.T. because they were already heavily involved with the Transformers franchise. I liked the transformations of K.I.T.T., you had the 3 primary modes. First a garden variety Mustang GT as the basic mode. Second when the "Hero Car" was need it transformed into a Shelby GT 500KR (for those who don't know classic Mustangs and Shelby Cobras, KR stood for King of the Road, not Knight Rider). Third when off road capabilities were needed it transformed into a customized F150 Raptor. Despite the grumbling by some fans the transformations made perfect sense as they were used. One additional transformation that I personally liked was used when they were on the run and were trying to hide in plain sight was when K.I.T.T. transformed into a 1969 Mach 1.
