Why cant Nick be ORIGINAL!

Disney obviously made a lot of money off of the HSM movies. Do they seriously thin they can pull this off???
Do the two leads actually expect to become the next Zac Efron-Vanessa Hudgens???
LOL!
NOOOOOOO way am I watching this.
LEAVE THE MUSICALS TO DISNEY!!!

I think HSM is overrated garbage. Seriously. The cast of HSM are bunch of terrible actors and "singers" and people praise them for they're "model like looks".

I saw previews for this movie and it looks good. And original too. This doesn't look like another HSM to me.

reply

It's not like HSM, it's more like Camp Rock. Even the trailer is like the Camp Rock trailer. But - at the risk of being ridiculed, I'm old enough to take it - I liked both HSM and Camp Rock (though CR wasn't as good) and I'm looking forward to this one. Wish they'd tell us when it's gonna be on, though.

reply

Well, I'm not trying to say it's trying to HSM but I am saying that Nick isn't original and should leave the musicals to Disney.

That's like saying CBS should leave the "crime procedural dramas" to NBC or vice versa. Every network wants to put their own spin on a particular formula. It's called competition and it works.

Have to say though I have a lot of respect for Nolan Gerard Funk at the moment. The cast was being interviewed about Spectacular and the interviewer commented about this being bigger than HSM and NGF came in by saying, "It's our own show, we're doing our own thing and we hope people like it." I think a couple of the others started adamantly saying that yeah it was going to be bigger or something trash talky but NGF wasn't taking the bait. I found that very mature and classy.

Regardless, I'm excited to see it and I hope it turns out well.

reply

agreed greendolphin93 that's why i am watching dadnapped on disney channel instead of this tv movie, mean nickelodeon has gone down every since they cancelled ren and stimpy show back in 1996 when i was 12!

reply

"Well, I'm not trying to say it's trying to HSM but I am saying that Nick isn't original and should leave the musicals to Disney."

That's pretty silly to say. Like you say Spectacular is trying to copy HSM, I could easily say HSM copied Grease. Come on, ideas get recycled all the time.

reply

HSM has an alternate title of "Grease 3," so yeah, I'm pretty sure it was supposed to be like a modern day Grease.

And isn't Nickelodeon a branch off of Disney? I mean, there's a whole section at Disney World in Orlando, Fl, for Nickelodeon Studios. Or at least there used to be....

"And isn't Nickelodeon a branch off of Disney? I mean, there's a whole section at Disney World in Orlando, Fl, for Nickelodeon Studios. Or at least there used to be.... "

hmm, I remember an attraction in Fl but I think it was a part of Universal Studios, not Disney.

"HSM has an alternate title of "Grease 3," so yeah, I'm pretty sure it was supposed to be like a modern day Grease."

Well, if that's true, it's really silly for people to complain about Nick copying Disney. Mostly everything on tv is recycled. ppl follow a formula because it works. Anyway, I'm not really a fan of HSM. Hopefully Nick will put out a tv musical with GOOD music. =P

yes, i think its quite blatantly nick trying to capitalize on the success of HSM by making their own kind of movie, bc they assume that they can captivate those same HSM fans with spectacular.
first mtv tried it with American Mall, now nick with Spectacular. its just really blatant and obvious. HSM might not be a GOOD movie (altho its fun and cheesy as hell, which is why i love it!) and it didnt really pretend to be a serious musical, which was part of its charm. everyone in it knew it was cheeseball and played up that whole image, and its just fun. i think with these other HSM-ripoffs they are trying to be legit, and thats where it gets stupid.
i dont think any other network's personal version will replicate the success of HSM. its not just movies. its a FRANCHISE. disney has been able to capitalize on HSM in their stores and their parks, which is something that cant really be done with the other attempts, American Mall and now the upcoming Spectacular.
its just not the same, and everyone keeps trying to make it the next HSM.

Thanks for the laugh green_dolphin.

Seriously, why do you care if Nick does this? You don't criticize Shell for selling gasoline when BP does. You don't criticize Domino's for selling pizza when Pizza Hut does. Why criticize Nick for making a musical when Disney did? It's how the business world works! COMPETITION. Who cares if its successful, who cares if flops? Seriously, you need to get a life if you're criticizing a HUGE company with financial advisors and other advisors that have studied and are paid to help Nick develop things like this. BACK OFF from them. Why does it matter if they want to make a musical too? Seriously.

reply

Finally, someone agrees with me! Disney was sooo the first do do musicals in general, let alone a musical involving teenagers! How dare Nick try to create a movie that is so similar to HSM. I mean they are totally the same, they both have music, teenagers, dancing, acting, actors, actresses, clothes, humans, limbs, speech, english, words, movement, breathing, faces, scenes, and worst of all, ACTION.

reply

"Disney was sooo the first do do musicals in general, let alone a musical involving teenagers!"

Now THAT is classic.

Anyway, I might give it a watch, simply because the actors and actresses look decent. I just hope it's not as immature as HSM.

reply

From seeing the previews, it looks sort of ridiculous. The part that bothers me the most is that the lead dude, Nikko(?), is supposed to be the rock-rebel dude who says that people criticize the way he does his hair, but he is the most mainstream cliche teenager I've seen on nick!

reply

Oh...my...god. What is wrong with our generation? This is the most illogical thing I've read ALL MONTH. It physically hurts me that someone could even TYPE this.

Oh wow...Um, I also said that Nick was ripping Disney off because in both movies there are people. Who breathe. I didn't expect anyone to take it seriously. So....yea.

Uh, no they weren't. Musicals have been around forever. And while Disney has been around a long time and they do a lot of them, they did not invent the concept. Musical theater dates as far back as Ancient Greece and the Middle Ages. The concept of live action filmed musicals came in the 1920's. And as far as official movie films for Disney (animation OR live action), Snow White (their first) wasn't even until 1937.

As you can see, "Disney was sooooo" NOT "the first [to] do musicals in general, let alone a musical involving teenagers." By "Involving teenagers" I assume you mean a story solely focused on them which again isn't the case. Grease, anyone?

Newsflash, people. There are only so many stories to be told, they just get told over and over with new names and new locations and new dialogue but still have the same basic themes because people like those stories. Good vs Evil, Triumph over Adversity, Self Discovery and so many others. They are the formulas of a story and there are only so many to go around. How it's pieced together is what changes and if they were really that close they'd get sued for copyright infringement.

I'm not saying there aren't similarities but let's not get ridiculous. They're different enough.

Just a little history lesson for the youngin's on the board.

reply

Look guys. Expelling something before it even comes out because it's SIMMILAR to other movies it stupid. There is no such thing as original these days because, quite litteraly, everything has been done before. It may be a little too much like HSM or camp rock
but it's not exactly the same
so grow up
really.

reply

I love Disney and all but honestly, I'm just going to say it, Camp Rock was not good. The Jonas Brothers are not actors, they should just stick to singing. Demi's performance was very...bland. The whole plot of the movie was bland. High School Musical at least was entertaining and had decent characters and acting.

Anyways, This movie looks okay but I'm sort of sick of musicals. I wish they made some teenage drama- something completely different.

I just wanted to thank you for your respectful post. Even though we disagree on some points there was nothing in this paost that seemed to attack anyone else on the board, you just simply stated your opinion on the subject and left it at that. Kinda weird for me to post this response but given all the crazy back-biting and fighting that goes on on these boards, I just wanted to recognize your effort. Thanks again.

reply

HSM was far from entertaining. The cast members in that all got annoying and never had that much talent to begin with. All of them are overrated.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. I think this movie is much different that HSM. The cast actually seem to have talent. And I'm pretty sure the leads in this movie won't have someone else sing they're vocals for the movie, nor will they ask for over $1 million to do a sequel!

reply

From everything I've heard it wasn't ZE's choice. In fact he wanted to sing - and did - but TPTB made the decision to use someone else instead. As for a million to do a sequel? I think it's a crazy amount as well but Disney made bank on this franchise. Why should they get all the profits? Just saying.

reply

It shouldn't be for the youngin's on the board. It should be for the naive people on the board...not all young people don't get it.

Exactly. Competition is the name of the game and it's how both companies stay in business.

reply

I feel like this is a mix of the HSM and Camp Rock movies like Disney. But I thinkt he musical fad is kinda over.

reply

yep! with High School Musical 3 coming into theatre and actually being good and with Mammia Mia coming out and smashing the Box Office, i think that was a good bow for the genre for now.

reply

Nothing is original you ding dong!

ALL LOVE STORIES ARE THE SAME!

i doubt any bosy is gunna make a love story where three people are in teh relationship.

its a musical.
about love (which teens are attracted to).
duh itll have two people.

disney wasnt the first to make a love musical.
im suprised you didnt know that.

what do you want nick to do?

make a friggen transvestite musical.

oh wait! thats been done too.

ever heard of the
rocky horror picture show?

yeah.
being original gunna happen?

uhhhh not so much.

reply

funny, this is what I thought when I saw the ads for Sonny with a Chance.
First thing I thought of was All That.

But that doesn't stop me from enjoying the show. Face it, the entertainment industry has been anything but original lately.

reply

Okay, I'll admit that Nickelodeon can't do musicals. That's a disney channel thing.. whatever! The point is that Nickelodeon will always be better than disney channel. Nickelodeon brought you The rugrats, Doug, Hey Arnold! AHH Real Monsters, All That, Clarissa Explains it All, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Pete and Pete, Spongebob, ETC. Nick has always been original.. except for 'spectacular'

reply

[deleted]

This actually looks pretty impressive and original.

Just because it's a musical it doesn't mean it's unoriginal.

I live in Texas, the home state of George W. Bush. I apologize.

reply

I remember a Nick show where there were quite a few musical numbers. It was called "Taina". And this was way before High School Musical.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mr8ZtFEh8j8

but yes, Nick is definitely trying to get a piece of the pie with Spectacular.

reply

Omg! I forgot about Taina! And, as a kid, I don't remember it being terrible either. During TeenNick and all of that! :D

And whoever said it before, all of those shows on Nick were awesome. They should have like... a week-long marathon of old-Nick shows. I would probably skip class for that. :P
