Glee ripped this off?
High school musical is a little different to this but Glee is more in the ball park as Spectacular.
shareI know this is a super late response, but I couldn't have the same thought while watching Glee. I feel like they both had very similar ideas, but Glee obviously executed there's a hell of a lot better (hence the success it's currently getting).
Well, Nolan Gerard Funk is on Glee now. Lol. He plays Hunter Clarrington, the new captain of The Warblers.

I am pretty sure that Glee was inspired by a part in Popular, a show Ryan Murphy did years before Glee. The main character was a football player who wanted to be in the school musical. I think Ryan had been wanting to do it for a while, and was finally able to give it full-swing. The earlier success of Camp Rock and High School Musical likely gave them the momentum they needed to do their show, and was definitely the fuel for Nick to come back at Disney with Spectacular!.
