What the....

I will be frank. This is film seems to have an interesting concept and with the setting in Australia a refreshing aspect. But the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Composition department, which is where I am studying now, is probably the worst place to learn to compose "Film Music" or what the general public considers classical music. It is an arch modernist school very much ideologically aligned with the likes of Ligeti or Stockhausen, more concerned with the musical philosophies of what is called sometimes called Avant Garde of the 1960s and 1970s.

Try musical scores like that of the beginning or the end of Space Odyssey 2001 that is the sound world we are talking about. Which is cool and very interesting too me but for most people think its the sound of cats being stretched out over hot coals.

For the protagonist I can't but help feel that when he turns up to learn how to write music he is going to be mortified and depressed.

I don't think they are concerned with going into the details of the realities of study at the school. The storyline focuses on his journey to get there, rather than what happens when he does.

In order to calm your concern properly would require a spoiler. But, ultimately it fits just fine.
