A 20 year old loner?

Does that mean shes 20 years old or been a loner for 20 years. Isn't a 20 year old a little to young to be a math teach, does she have a degree?

reply

I'm pretty sure she's meant to only be 20. Which I guess is an unusual age for a teacher, but I wouldn't think unheard of.

I remember having a 23 year old for my homeroom teacher in 6th grade, and I even remember her being there the year previously. She had to have been fairly fresh out of college though. Every now and then, I remember her making a few mistakes, (grammar, spelling and such) that even I knew at my age at the time. She was obviously still on a learning curve, but she was always nice and overall a very capable 6th grade teacher. Probably one of my favorite teachers I've ever had - certainly worth hiring even so young.

So, I'd guess you really only need your standard 4-year degree before teaching at most elementary schools. I haven't seen the movie yet and I've never read the book it's based on, but the main character seems to be a bit of a math genius. Maybe she finished school early and earned her degree at a younger age. I don't really know though.

It explained in the movie, no degree but her mother gets her the teaching job by lying about her having a degree.

doesnt she need a degree AND a teachers qualification?

reply

hahahah I thought the same thing. The lady just took her mom's word for it.

And at once I knew I was not magnificent.

reply

Seriously! That's so unrealistic. She didn't even check to make sure she had a college degree. If only it were that easy to get a job, someone practically handing you one on a platter!

No. Her character was meant to be pushing 30 (actress was 28). She had suffered with OCD since she was about 10 years old, when her father's mental illness became chronic.

Her pigtails, attire, and compulsions were to help us understand that she was a grown woman stunted both emotionally and mentally.
