I saw this when it first came out on TNT and I'm just now reading the book. While I don't think the movie was horrible I think there was a lot they could have done to make it better. What are your thoughts? As I've been reading the book I was thinking it would have been cool if they had cast Malcolm McDowell as Max Devore. Not saying the guy in the movie did bad, just that McDowell can play such great villains.
shareWhat I would do is stick to the novel much more. Have Jo die the same way she did in the book. Have the movie start off by Mike walking into the morgue to identify his wife's body. Cast actors the right age, not much older than in the book. This is especially annoying in the case of Kyra. The book felt WAY different than the movie did and the book wins in that regard by a long shot. The same applies to Mattie. Then there are scenes that were unnecessarily rushed or dumbed down otherwise (like the scene were Mike gets rocks thrown at his head by Rogette which was a NIGHTMARE in the book, but more of a nuisance in the film), especially the relationship between Mike and Mattie, and pretty much the entire end. I definitely understand that corners need to be cut to fit it in a mini series but I don't know if sacrificing important bit of the book is such a good idea.
shareI didn't read the book, so I'll approach this only as my view of the movie by itself.
The casting was generally good, except for:
- Melissa George. She was overacting more than a teenager meeting Bieber for the first time.
- Debora Grover. Probably not her fault, but makeup and dress made her look like a cartoon character from a cheesy comedy.
The plot was intelligent, and mixed some mystery with some scary parts... that was ok.
But the ending... Oh, boy! It was too explanatory (Movie plots for Idiots?) and cheesy! The tree fight, the two ghosts arguing with each other, the scissor fight, the MOM IN THE BATHTUB... oh, please. Stop already!
Otherwise it could have been a decent movie.
If you could recast and or redo the movie what would you do?File for a restraining order forcing mick -the hack- garris to keep 3 states away from the production.
We need another Leslie Nielsen he would have made a fine Mike. This over the top genre is ripe for a send up.
