When everyone was running out of the school, their reaction to the fence really confused me. First, none of those people thought to use the picnic table before Sean came out? Really? But most importantly, they all acted like they had never seen the fence before. One person even said, "What is this fence doing here?" Just seemed like a strange scene to me I guess

They were panicking. In situations like that, people freak out and don't think. Trust me, I know.

I read somewhere that during the day of the actual attack, a construction fence had been put in place in one of the fields next to the school which normally wasn't there. This may have been a a reference to that.
