Accents in this movie

Is it me or every one in this movie talks with a Southern drawl in some kind of way. Wasn't Charlie Rakes (Guy Pearce) supposed to be from Chicago or something? same thing with Floyd Banner (Gary Oldman)? Everyone in this movie has some kind of Southern drawl in their speech, except Jessica Chastain's character, even the one's not playing Hillbillies. Does anyone else agree with me or i'm just hearing things?

Neither Rakes nor Banner has a drawl.

Rakes, Banner, and Maggie didn't sound Southern at all to me.

My dad's family is from around Chicago, Il. My mom's side is from around Savannah, GA. We now live in GA. Guy's accent, for a man from Chicago, is awful! He sounds neither northern nor southern to me. He sounds European, trying to sound "American-ish".

Chicago was a different city during the Depression.

Its set in Southwest Virginia, but they didn't know how to do the local flavor, so they just used generic Hollywood "Southern". Southern Appalachia sounds quite a bit different than a deep south drawl.

If you heard a "Southern Drawl" in Banner or Rakes, you're hearing things. Neither one sounded the least bit Southern. I could hear Australian coming out of Guy Pearce, but he sounded Northern. Gary Oldman sounded like New Jersey.

So, you're hearing things.
