So basically it's the Chinese government fault

Marvel/Disney doesn't want to piss them off and risk losing potential profit from that market.

Why don't people take it up to china if they're that upset?

Because no one cares.

It's not. The writer is clearly pointing fingers when it's his job. Sure it was compromised, sure he could have done a better job. Anyway, moving on.

reply

They've done this before with cutting Chinese villains or adding in Chinese actors in cameos for scenes only meant for Chinese release.
Don't know why they didn't just jerk the Chinese off by making the Ancient One Chinese instead though.

Those damn dirty communists.

What's missing in movies is same as in society: a good sense of work ethic and living up to ideals.

reply

Doesn't explain a black Baron Mordo, though. Wasn't aware that European nobility was from a completely different continent this entire time.

I think I know precisely what I mean when I say it's a shpadoinkle day!

Will it really truly matter in the scheme of things?

Actually a pretty obvious example of capitalism in action. The customer is always right.

As someone that's worked in customer service before I say without hyperbole: hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

reply

Ultimately, it is Marvel's fault. They could have, indirectly, told the Chinese government to pound sand by choosing to retain Stephen Strange's backstory.

I suppose profit supersedes refusal of pretty discriminatory practices by taking a stand, though. That's what you get when you're dealing with an amoral entity (i.e. a business)

I'm betting Disney made the decision, wouldn't be the first time they choose money over morale.

Well, the image of John Boyega's character of Finn/F-N WAS reduced on a poster for "The Force Awakens" that was marketed in China...

If china that offended over a black man on a poster, what are they going to do with the Black Panther movie?

.

You can also forget about any gay main protagonists. They too are banned/frowned upon in China.

Being frowned upon i can somewhat see, but is it really banned?

I believe so. Perhaps i'll check up on their current standing in Chinese media.

Nope. I live in China and I didn't see any posters specially deleted John Boyega.

Deleted, no. Shrunken down? Yes.

Because these are the only types of black people that are allowed in China:

Yep, that's a scene from a Chinese film that was officially released in China a few years ago.

You can partly chalk that up to the fact that Chinese culture was closed off from the rest of the world for so very long.

China is also one of the reasons most blockbusters are PG13, apparently. The main reason Deadpool wasn't released in China.

reply

The Ancient One was originally in India, not Tibet. Even if it was changed later, they could have always gone back to that.

So apparently supernatural/spiritual type films are banned in china. Which would suck for Ghost Rider film.....

Dorothy: Another one to join us on our journey! And what are you missing? Batman: A sense of humor.

reply

Sex and supernatural contents are completely banned in cinemas of China mainland. That's why Ghostbusters (2016) won't release in China mainland and all Chinese horror movies end up with man-made reasons.

reply

So apparently supernatural/spiritual type films are banned in china.

So why bother altering the Ancient One at all then? Doctor Strange is entirely about the supernatural, the guy spent every comic of his I've ever read battling evil spirits, demons and vampires with his magic spells. That pretty much excludes Doctor Strange from the Chinese market through and through, doesn't it? So why cater to the Chinese by removing a Tibetan character and replacing him with an incredibly (blindingly) white British woman?

reply

I don't know. It'll be funny if China bans the film tho.

Dorothy: Another one to join us on our journey! And what are you missing? Batman: A sense of humor.

reply

That would be great...but seeing as how Marvel has bent over to alter the source material during adaptation to please the Chinese government, I find it unlikely.

More likely. Despite all of this i want the film to do well.

The world of Doctor Strange is fascinating and future films could do a lot of crazy stuff!
