Why didn't they let Benedict Cumberbatch keep his accent?

Marvel actually wanted him to keep his English accent, but since Strange is American in the comics, Cumberbatch insisted on using an American accent for the role because he wanted to stay true to the source material.

Dr. Strange is American. His accent would have worked fine, but Cumberbach insisted.
