English Actors Doing American Accents... oh no. Not again.

Ooff. Its BAD when at the VERY START you hear an English Actor over TRYING to do an American accent... It always sounds so FAKE. They OVER emphasise certain words, nasally, and you can always HEAR the English accent come through, occasionally, totally destroying the credibility of the character. Is Dr. Strange really a Brit??? Pretending to be American? Nope... He's SUPPOSED to be American. He just SOUNDS so FAKE. Why couldn't they find an Italian American to play Strange? He LOOKS Italian American in the comics. (or come up with a back story, where he was raised by Brits. That would be a good explanation for the "weird", unconvincing, nasal, "eagsent". (accent))

You also hear it with Dr. House, and it destroyed that series for some of us. Glad others don't mind it. You see, those who KNOW Hugh Laurie from his other stuff, where he's using his normal English accent, will feel he sounds like that over the top parody they did of American Businessmen, in "A Bit of Fry and Laurie". So over emphatic, esp. since it was supposed to be mocking / making fun of Americans. Dr. House seems like an extended sketch of him parodying / making fun of the American accent. (as he was) Great that he had success with it (season after season), but some of us couldn't & can't watch it. That put-on over emphatic nasal accent always kills it's credibility.

*ahem* I still watched it 3 times though (so far). ;-)

Maybe it's because you were already used to his normal voice. Those of us who hadn't heard Hugh Laurie before, thought his American accent was great!

Arthur, put the kettle on and dig out those lemon hand wipes.

Hughes American accent is ok, I think he pulls off the deep accent well, unfortunately cumberface doesn't

reply

I haven't seen House, but I wholly agree with you re: Cumberbatch's accent - it was really distracting.

reply

I'm English. Came here to complain about his voice. It's cringe worthy

reply

It just shouldn't be done !!

US actors playing Brits always sound like they are making a poor attempt at mimicking royalty.

Brits playing US characters just sound like they are trying too hard.

How hard is it to hire a US actor for an American role and a British actor for a British role !!

reply

Exactly!

I thought Cumberbatch's accent was fine. It took me awhile to remember he was a brit. Laurie's accent in House was perfect. I only ever heard the tiniest slip one time.

reply

I agree. Didn't notice it at all.

I sort of heard it as a "mid Atlantic accent ", one that upper class Americans have where there is a posh sound to it. This accent was more common 50 years ago than today but it still exists.

Some actors do accents and some don't. I think Hugh Laurie sounds great. On the Netflix side, both Charlie Cox and Fin Jones have perfect accents as Daredevil and Iron Fist. Cumberbatch has a weird voice, though. It's too throaty and deep. Tom Holland as Spider-Man is usually okay, but you can hear him slip every now and then like when he said "Captain, big fan".

reply

Well,

I think he did great.

A hell of a lot better than Keanu Reeves, an American trying to act with a southern accent.

Every time he opened his mouth, i cringed.. I'm sure Al Pacino and Charlize Theron did too..
