The thing is I didn't see everything as trying to get a laugh. The parts that were humorous (IMO) were the parts with his cape, some of the scenes with his (not) girlfriend, when he was out of body in the hospital, and maybe a couple other small instances.
Things like him in the library with the librarian weren't meant to garner laughs (again IMO) but were just slightly sarcastic, or off hand remarks maybe meant to bring a little smile but nothing more.
I thought it was pretty well balanced actually.
But yeah, I agree with a 9/10 :). I thoroughly enjoyed it.
This is definitely my favourite MCU origin movie and maybe my favourite superhero origin movie period (I think Batman Begins is the only one that may surpass it, though I'm a massive Doctor Strange fan and the movie really gave me everything I wanted).
Great acting, characters, action, visuals, and some quite emotional moments. It took the standard, formulaic superhero origin story and made the absolute best of it.
I thought Kaecilius was a good villain (especially by MCU standards).
On the negative side; it's a shame that Mads Mikkelsen's role in the MCU is just a one-off villain even if it is one of their better efforts. I wish we could have seen more of Christine Palmer - so far I like her more than I liked Pepper Potts or Jane Foster but she had a tiny role compared to what I thought it would be. The final act was slightly rushed, though I really liked the way Strange defeated Dormammu.
Some of the jokes fell totally flat, though overall I liked the humour.
I might be a bit of a hardass but I just can’t give it a 9, no matter how much I enjoyed the visuals and the acting.
Some plot points were just too formulaic and some story arcs seemed rushed. His training for example went a bit too fast and could easily have been 5-10 minutes longer imo. I also felt as though the supporting cast (including the villain) got too little screen time and development. This kind of origin movie might have deserved an extra half hour to really flesh it out… but I know people would have complained that it was too long etc.. (not an issue for me, I believe a movie can be 3 or 4 hours long if it works). Additionally the spoken comedy seemed a bit forced from time to time (especially with Wong) but on the other hand the situational comedy was excellent (cape, astral body in the hospital, etc…)
That said I still thoroughly enjoyed the movie and thought it was stunningly beautiful with an intelligent twist on how to defeat the bad guy in the end, very reminiscent of a better Dr. Who episode. The scene in the slowmo lightning-snow-storm was one of the most wonderful visual scenes that really worked with the mood it was trying to convey and will probably deserve a spot in the hall of fame for me.
All in all the movie was really enjoyable even though it lacked certain elements: 8/10 from me.
Yes. Trng could have added 5-10 mins longer and even that wouldnt make the movie too long. That would also justify strange beating keycilius in the very first fight!
But he had the cape to help him. I think it would be harsh to nitpick and trash the film for no reason
