Advice for a TF2 Newbie

So I'm finally going to be getting this game later this week (I must be the last person on Steam to get it, haha), and I was hoping I might be able to ask a question or two of TF2 veterans. Main reason is, I just don't want to look like a complete in-over-my-head-n00b (*coughleft4dead) when I delve into the game.

Which classes are the best to start out with? I've read up on each class, but none have really jumped out at me. And actually one class in particular I already feel an aversion to. That is the Sniper because I'm not the greatest of precision shooters (despite logging in over 1100 hours playing Left 4 Dead since it came out - among other FPS games). What I do like about the Sniper class though is the fact that it seems more of a solitary, background position.

Any and all advice would be very much appreciated. :)

The heavy and pyro are good classes to start off with. they are very as you say "n00b" friendly the pyro doesn't have to worry about reloading and the heavy can take a lot of damage(granted tho he is a bigger target for snipers) my next bit of advice tho this is just plain common sense is to NEVER STOP MOVING! lol anywho if you decide to go pyro know that you're going to have to rely on ambush tactics against the enemy. They see you coming and you're dead pretty much. Hope I helped some

I agree with bluetiger, pyro & heavy = good starts. Medic is also good, because you don't have to do anything except latch on to someone who looks like they know what they're doing and just keep healing them.

Also, if you think you might like to just explore for a while, scout might be a good choice. Their weak in health and can be hard to attack with, but they're also so fast that most enemies won't be able to hit you.

Thanks so much guys, you've been really helpful! There seems to be a general consensus... I asked a couple of other people as well where they thought I should start out, and those four classes (pyro, scout, heavy & medic) have been the ones most often suggested to me. In particular, pyro and scout. So I think I'll start out with one of those classes and see what happens from there.

Also, if you think you might like to just explore for a while, scout might be a good choice.

I especially like this idea since I, as I sorta touched upon in my first post, don't feel like getting into the very thick of the action right away. I just wouldn't feel comfortable.

Well, wish me luck! :)

Well, I've been playing TF2 non-stop lately (and have tried each class at least once), but so far I've done best in the scout and pyro classes. Good thing I enjoy playing those two classes the most. I'm just gonna keep focusing on those two classes and hopefully get better and better.

The Pyro's unlockable flame thrower isn't as good as the original. The original has the very convenient and overlooked Compression blast.

Don't tell me what I can't do!

I actually like the backburner a lot, although the flamethrower's compression blast is hard to live without. Which to use is always a hard decision for me to make.

As for the scout's unlockables. I'm always switching between the scattergun and the FAN or the Bonk and the pistol. I can't figure out which combination I prefer. Still haven't gotten the Sandman, although I did get a hat (the scout's batter's helmet). Apparently hats are a big deal or something in the tf2 community? At least it was on the server I was playing... even more so after I told everyone I'd only been playing for a few days, lol.
