TF2 Guide for PC

I've been playing Team Fortress 2 on my Xbox and I'm thinking about making the move to PC. Are there things I need to know about PC that's different from Xbox? Are there unwritten rules to know?
And can someone fill me in on whether online is free, what are the hats and how do you get them, what's the deal with "servers," are the players nice/skilled, will I be able to play with players that match my skill, and how do I commmunicate?
Basically just any advice on TF2 for the PC and the answers to the previous questions will suffice.

Much appreciated!!!

Having never played TF2 on XBox, I don't know what the differances are, but I will try to answy your other questions as best I can.

Online play is free.

The hats are: Pyro: One of those "loony" hats with a propeller on top.
Heavy: Football Helmet.
Medic: One of those old german army helmets with the spike on top.
Soldier: Kind of like his ordinary hat, but with a feather on the side.
Demo: An Afro hairstyle
Spy: A hat with a relatively broad brim. Looks like the sort of thing a tourist in south america would wear. Kind of like the one Hannibal Lecter puts on at the end of Silence of the Lambs.
Scout: Foam Dome (One of those hats with beer cans on the sides, except this one has BONK! instead of beer.)
I don't think I've seen the other classes hats yet. There is also a halo that you get simply for not cheating, and this can be worn by all classes.

Servers:
You get a list of servers, along with their ping (or how long it takes your signal to get to the server, in milliseconds. The lower the better with this number, I wouldn't reccommend connecting to a server with a ping over 200), the number of players currently playing and the maximum player capacity of the server, and the currant map the server is on. You have to chose which of these servers you wish to play. Some servers have custom maps that you don't get with the normal TF2 package, but that's okay because your computer will automatically download the new map when you log on to a server playing a map you don't have.

Players are generally nice and challenging opponents, however, as with all online communities, you do run across the odd jerk here and there.

I'm not familiar with any means to enter a game specifically with players of a certain skill level, but there are some servers called "ranked servers", where everything you do contributes to a perpetual gamer score. I don't know if these servers offer any means for players of certain skill levels to get together exclusively.

Communication is through voip, which you activate by hitting a pre-assigned key. Obviously you need a mic for this. You can also chat usting team chat (which only teammates can read) and global chat (every play in the game can read). Only teammates can hear your voip talk, except in some special servers where everybody can hear you.

That's pretty much it. Like I say, I don't know anything about how TF2 works on XBox, but I'd imagine that it's pretty much the same game. Have fun!

Yes, thank you very much! That pretty much covers all my questions. Though I apologize for making you name all the hats because I already knew what they were, I just didn't know what they do and how you get them. Sorry if I wasn't clear in my post, and don't worry I looked it up so you don't have to worry about answer.
I don't have a mic, so I'm glad you told me about the team chat because I had no idea that existed. And I expect an occasional jerk or too. I also was unaware of ping. Like you said, the rest is pretty much like the Xbox.
But again, much appreciated!
