What can You expect from a 20 year old writer/director?

I mean, the kid is 20 years old! He expects to edit/write/producer/direct and act in a feature film? dreaaaammmerrrr....... or just rich and lucky.

reply

Seriously not even Tarantino would have had enough experience/skill to do this when he was 20. This is ridiculously ambitious. Who gave him funding for Christ's sake?

reply

I find you both to be terribly ridiculous, sad and most likely really lazy people. Did I throw in judgemental? For sure lazy and un-ambitious.

that's my two-cents.

reply

AntFitz4, what the *beep* are you talking about? How does what we said equate to being lazy?

Welles was 26 when he did "Kane." Did I just compare John Conner to Orson Welles?

reply

No, you compared a 20 year old to a 26 year old. That's a huge, HUGE difference in age.

90% of filmmakers today make their debuts at around 25, 26. Nobody, NOBODY does it at 20. But, I guess, with him being a famous actor and all, it's probably a little bit easier.

reply

Except that Welles was already an acclaimed actor before he was 20 years old. Then he made even more success working on plays in theaters and was actually offered full artistic control by RKO studios (unthinkable at the time). Now set that off to a not so special actor who happens to be in a position where he apparently can get the funds to make his own movie. You can't compare anyone to Welles because Welles was in a league on his own.

age means absolutely nothing, especially in the arts. if one has talent (and i am not really going to comment on his lack or possession of talent because i really do not know enough about him to do so), then their age is really not a factor in their success. in fact, i thing his young age might be an asset, i feel a lot of today's directors are simply recycling the same things they've been doing for years, at least now we can see something fresh.
it's about talent, ambition, knowledge, and drive. all of those things can be obtained or discovered at any age.

of course it will have its problems do to the lack of experience Dekker has as a filmmaker, but still, it will be interesting to see what he does turn out.

reply

Thomas Dekker is a piece of work. If you see him in interviews or just about anything outside Terminator...he's different. Not going to say good or bad, just...different. At any rate, just the description of this movie has me turned off.

Nikki Reed wrote, pitched, and starred in Thirteen when she was fifteen, and it was her first job in the industry.

*agrees with mean green* if nikki reed can do it, they why can't anybody esle?

he probably just called in a lot of favours.. if you know enough people, it wouldn't be too difficult to call them up n ask for them to spare an hour or an afternoon here n there, and the same with camera equipment, don't always need huge pots of money if u got people willing to donate their skills for the day. haven't read a full description or see it yet, but would like to.

Chances are this movie was made with little-to-nothing. Thomas Dekker may have credit behind him, along with a popular TV show, but he's still not all that well known.
As for him being "different" outside of Terminator, it just goes to show that he's an actor. John Connor is just a role, no matter how understated or simple the character may seem, Thomas Dekker is acting in that role. Of course he's going to be different in real life.

Also, Sam Raimi made Evil Dead at the age of 22.
