Was he gay? The father mentioned worrying about the "world being harder" on him. Why? Also, when Ned and Cliff were fighting he keeps calling him a punk. Kind of felt like he was telling him to man up. Maybe that's why he started a sexual relationship with Kate. To try and prove to himself (and in a way to his father) that he could be a man.
