Similarities or coincidence?

I'd like to know if the director and writer, Måns Herngren, have possibly "lent" this theme from the japanese movie "Waterboys" by Shinobu Yaguchi?
Judging from the trailer, it looks to be an "adult" version of the very same movie.

However, many of you reading this have probably never heard of "Waterboys", seeing as it is a Japanese movie and as far as I know has not travelled the borders all the way to Sweden. But I do recommend you to check it out if you ever get the chance.

Even if Måns Herngren or any other person involved in this movie hardly ever will acknowledge a possible connection between the movies, at least we can discuss the matter.

It would only be fair to credit the original author, one way or another. To most people, the theme of having male synchronized-swimmers will seem weird, but in a comical aspect, pure genius.

Not that I feel a need to diminish some of the "fame and glory" Måns Herngren probably will earn from this title, but I do feel a need to inform the public. They are then free to make their own assumptions.

"Lending" ideas has never been a new thing in movies. But lending a theme and overall plot development usually calls for some crediting to be done.

I agree! It's simply a ripof of the japanese movie Waterboys. And I think there is a large amount of people in sweden that will recognise this.

I live in Sweden and wasn't all that interested in the movie as I'm not a big fan of Måns Herngren. Then I saw Japanorama and the spot about the movie Waterboys (which I'm planning on seeing soon as I managed to get a copy) and both me and my wife said this had to be influenced.
It would be interesting if Måns would ever talk about the similarities, and the fact that his movie is just 4 years younger than Waterboys.

As another poster has pointed out, although it may look like the story/theme has been borrowed from 'Waterboys', the Swedish documentary 'Men Who Swim' was possibly the main influence here.

I was thinking this too, about 'Men Who Swim'! I just watched 'Men Who Swim' and am now watching 'The Swimsuit Issue', but 'The Swimsuit Issue' was actually made first, wasn't it?
