True story or not?

Why, at the end of the credits, does it say that the characters are fictitious? At least on Netflix it says that at the end. This is true, right?

The film says in its advertisements, and official web site, that it is "based on a true story." The director, Don Smith's son, wanted to tell his father's story (he won the Croix de Guerre and the Bronze Star for his actions). My guess would be that the other characters are fictitious, perhaps based on real people, or composites of several, as is typical in story telling of this type.

Weird. I guess that's to be expected.
Thanks.
