I'm from MT

I'm not trying to be over-sensitive here, but I just wanted anyone who hasn't visited our great state to know that we aren't bumpkins and that we are very much in touch with the "mainstream world." We even have indoor plumbing. And if I see this movie and they have southern accents, I'm going to sh*t a brick. Thanks for your time.

reply

Sounds bleeding terrible. Those loveable rascal bumpkins from the hills of ol' Montan. Yeehaw! On a collision course with the modern realities of the worldly modern world.

Ugh. Are you kidding me? We're still here? We're still at this point?

I like that the person insulting Montana and their technology spelled "traveled" incorrectly. It makes it that much funnier...

Unless they were using a Canadian spelling.

Bzzt! Wrong, but thanks for playing. "Travelled" is the correct spelling.

Don't worry. No disrespect to the great state of Montana intended.
They don't have southern accents and are familiar with indoor plumbing. The grandkids are socially dysfunctional because they have been raised by an eccentric, almost mute woman in an isolated way. They could be from Alaska or the Everglades or West Texas. The screenwriter chose Montana because he'd spent some time there and thought it was a beautiful and interesting place.

reply

If he thought it was so 'beautiful and interesting,' why didn't he actually film any of it there? Probably the Montana Film Commission sued to get the name changed and got an injunction to keep the producers from the crossing the border to make the film.

This film should have just been called the 'Dunderheads' or 'Dunderheads from California.' Probably the later, as Mr. Ed the talking horse would have done a better job delivering dialog than the actors.

On second thought, they could have used some of the 'Dunderheads' from CA who move here and try to MT just like the snake pit they just escaped from.

reply

I'm from Montana too, so I know how you feel.
But in my town we actually did have kids ride horses to school and there were cattle drives down main street and right in front of the school. Sadly, there's almost always a nugget of truth in stereotypes...

reply

I'm amazed to see that we continue to be stereotyped after all this time. Damn those high-falutin' city folk! j/k

(By the way, I was born and raised in Helena, MT so I have the right to make jokes)

reply

i'm asian, but we're not all good at math...
i have a couple of black friends that can't play basketball.

stereo types abound. sucks, huh? stupid media (tv and a lot of main strream movies) just push the same stereo types like we are still living in the 60's... geniuses.

reply

Did you even watch the trailer? Nearly the entire premise of the film is that this particular family is not like anyone else, including the rest of the residents of Montana. They aren't backwoods hicks because they live in Montana, they're backwoods hicks because they were raised in isolation by an eccentric parent. How you can be browbeaten about the fact that these people are unique and yet still believe it to be a perpetuation of stereotype is amazing.

And I thought you Asians were supposed to be smart. (And yes, this IS an ironic use of stereotyping.)

reply

Well the trailer is now up and I have actually seen the movie at the Orlando Film Festival. The movie has nothing to do with generalizing people who live in Montana. It is about the outcast family of a town. If you are able to watch the film at one point there is no reason to be upset because it is for entertainment.

I saw the movie in November (there may be a new cut of the film before it hits theaters) but the film isn't insulting all people from Montana. The characters in the film are just that one family that you know is off their rockers (they could be from any town really but may be the thought is that in a stay where there is more space between neighbors you can get away with being crazy unnoticed).
