Is this based on a documentary?

Quite recently I saw a Eastern European documentary to which this movie (The Angel) looked very similar. The documentary followed a girl over several years, she was an addict, had a child, gave it away, etc. Also the the actress in this movie looked very similar to the girl in the documentary. And in the documentary there was a scene where the girl climbed into a fountain, just like in this movie. Seems hard to believe that these similarities were all just accidental.
