Generic and underwhelming (spoilers)

My chief criticism is that you could have removed John Rambo from the film and replaced him with The Terminator (in fact, 'Terminator: Dark Fate' also had a T-800 adopting a Mexican family, living a peaceful existence and then being dragged back into action), The Punisher or any number of other trigger-happy characters.

'Rambo: Last Blood' was a generic revenge/action story... it had nothing to say about its iconic title character or even the Mexican cartels (in a post-'Sicario' world, that doesn't cut it). It's surprising that Adrian Grunberg, who directed and co-wrote the much more inventive and entertaining 'Get the Gringo', had his name attached to this one.

It actually was better than I expected and one of my more enjoyable theatrical experiences of 2019.

I think the Rambo series has always been fairly generic, except for the first one. It's just a super-soldier going into a place of conflict and fucking shit up.

I rewatched Rambo (2008) right after Last Blood and found myself bored by it. Last Blood was better, in my opinion.
