shareNot really. I've got lots of idea for what Rambo could be doing after he comes home, but none of them lead to Rambo waging a one-man war against anybody. Can't have him fighting our military or vets joined up in cults or anything. Can't think of anything worthy of being a Rambo film.

Include Michael Bay-esque shots and close ups. Crazy camera work like Saw, and the penultimate ending...: him doing his war scream and breaking the jar in half, brine splashing him in the face so he looks all savage. Black screen. The end.
It's not about the story, it's about how well you tell it. This film was an unorganized mess in that regard. I'd stick to the same story, or should I better say concept, but edit a lot of the details in story.
I'd split the movie in two parts, one in mexico and one back home so poor Rambo doesn't have to cross the border 10 times. The part in mexico would be about him CAREFULLY rescuing the girl (i.e. not walking into their hq as a senile old man only to get his ass kicked). Planning and execution like in Rambo 2 and 3.
I'd also stop Stallone from making Rambo into a slasher movie villain - I mean, kill as many bad guys with your knife as you want, but edit it more as a tactical action movie, not friday the 13th.
Ok, now Rambo saves the girl, we go back to ol' US of A. Home turf. Cartel tracks him down and he runs into the woods to make his stand. I think that would be more fitting than some underground labyrinth that doesnt make fucking sense and belongs to, you know, a cheap slasher movie. I say woods would be more fitting as the place where it all kind of started with First Blood. Plus, Rambo is an expert when it comes to survival in the wilderness, it would only make sense for him to retreat there.
As for the girl, she may live, but if she dies, make it about rescuing the other girls instead of going for a pure revenge porn.
I thought that was a really bad recon for a special forces vet who has been up against far better than a bunch of gangsters. His sloppiness (even carrying his wallet!) killed the girl quicker.
I guess he wanted something different. At one point I thought it was going to be like Rambo 2 but rescuing kidnapped girls instead of vets.
