Not sending letters to his girlfriend from prison

If I recall correctly, he was drafting letters to his girlfriend in prison. However, he seemed to pack them meaning he was drafting them but not sending them. No wonders she left him. I can hardly understand why he would do that. The only thing I can think of : he felt good writing them but didn't want her to wait for him.
