Eddie Redmayne saved this film.

I watched this on the pretense that Chloe made this film great, and while she is a talented actress and I tend to follow everything she does, she paled in comparison to the complexity and depth Eddie gave to his character.

There was a 30 minute lull in the film that corresponded to him not being on screen, and when he showed up again finally at the bar, I was lifted out of boredom.
I found myself rooting for him and rooting for Luli (Chloe) to continue on with him despite that fact that he was a certified sociopath.
Just a very nuanced performance.

Blake Lively did better than expected too.

Eddie Redmayne was great in this film. He made a character that could have just been a sociopath interesting. I hate to admit it, but until the last twenty minutes or so - I was rooting for the Eddie character.

Dude, it's interesting that you are an ImDb member for 14 years, and you are commenting like a 14 year old!

I agree, he was amazing. He completely pulled off the accent and mannerisms of a redneck, it's hard to believe that he is a British guy who studied at Eton (which is a school for posh boys).

He also made his character very sympathetic and deep, unlike the book, where Eddie is a typical one dimensional bad guy. I too found myself rooting for him and Luli. His facial expressions were so full of raw emotion that you realize he deserves his recognition as a great actor.

Because of his performance the movie turned out to be better than the book (and that is something I rarely find).

You rooted for an abusive, child rapist? Okay.
