The biography on Jack Ryan here says: "During the summer of his third year in the Academy he was in a helicopter crash somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea."

Is the helicopter crash in this movie (in Afghanistan) a different crash?

Or is this story a reboot having nothing much to do with the books and previous movies?

They just ripped off the name of the main character from Clancy. Jack Ryan in this film, in no way resembles the Ryan of the Novels or of the other films.

All they did was use the name.

I joined the Navy to see the world, only to discover the world is 2/3 water!

The crash in this movie is in 2003 or 2004.
