The elderly black couple

This part of the film baffled the crap out of me. While I can understand possibly calling your neighbor in certain circumstances, I can't see myself calling said neighbor when random people show up at my door in the middle of the night begging for me to call the cops and accusing the neighbor of murder. It just didn't make any sense at all. I may have bought it had the older black guy also called the cops, as well as the neighbor/killer, but not just the neighbor....there's just no logic to that.

Now had they just been trying to get into their house, didn't mention anything about the murders or mentioned them but requested you NOT call the cops...yeah, it would make sense; but not when they are asking nothing of you BUT to call the cops. The bad guys don't generally politely stay where you tell them to, frightened out of their minds, and beg for the cops to be called. That would have made me at least want the cops involved in it before I would even entertain the thought of speaking to the accused neighbor over the phone, much less in person.

It's always better to fart in the toilet than to poop in your pants!

Yeah they were dumb...they got what they deserved...

Mr. Pink: You shoot anybody?
Mr. White: A few cops.
Mr. Pink: No real people?

How exactly were "they" dumb and "got what they deserved"?

First, the wife thought he was calling the police so she wasn't dumb.
Second, evn if the husband was dumb, by what stretch of the imagination did either of them deserve to DIE based on their actions or even inactions?

i thought the same thing!! exactly, its ridiculous that the old black man called the motel guy and not the cops, what a dumbass! like what you said, when the two kids are obviously saying, call the cops they are trying to kill us, how is it that the motel guy's story of them trying to rob him make any sense! i liked the old woman though. it was a shame though they got killed, they were only trying to help though.

Elderly black guy called the motel guy because they were in an isolated area - elderly black woman was talking about how the police would take some time to show up because the police station was quite far away.

He thought he was protecting his family - if some kids showed up on my door I'd probably call my neighbor over too.

I didn't get this either. The only thing I can think is that they are supposed to be stereotypical hicks that are quick not to trust strangers so they call the people they sort of know instead of the cops. It was really dumb though.

part of me is thinking though that the hotel staff called them ahead of time and the elderly man was acting like they were going to keep them there until the hotel staff picks up what is rightfully their's.

First of all, I think it's unlikely that the old man called the motel (even if he did it is highly unlikely that anyone was present at the motel to pick up the phone because they were probably still hunting for their victims).

When they first come knocking at the couple's door the two do mention that the people (or at least one) at Meadow View Inn were trying to kill them.

However, contrary to what the people are saying in this thread, I don't think the old man called the neighbors. We can see this because when they hear a car pull in the old man says: "Sounds like the sheriff."

Thus it seems he chose to believe his neighbor, who he'd never imagine being a killer (I mean... do you suspect your neighbor of committing murder?), over the words of two strangers... even though the two clearly stated that it included someone working at the motel. Dumb... yes... deserved to die?... I don't think so...

I guess though if the murderers called ahead BEFORE the two protagonists arrived - as stated by 'JapanGaijin' - then the whole situation would make more sense...
Shows that the writers of the movie gave no real thought to any possible plot holes or contradictions much.

Did some of you people watch the movie, the kids said that somebody from the motel were trying to kill them. He called the guy, maybe his cell phone, he knew the motel guy and trusted the guy, and the motel guy told him that they were trying to steal and ran off. If you know somebody and you trust them, your goin to believe them over some strangers who show up at your house at 3AM.

Even then the Motel guy would never kill the black couple he was friends with the old man, it was the crazy killer who was outta control.

I got the impression from what was said, that the main guy at the hotel had already called to tip them off that some people that "tried to rob the motel" may show up out there and that if they did to call him.

I would never leave you. I would never hurt you. And I will never stop loving you...

Agreed. It's just kind of willful stupidity and counter-intuitive behavior by characters that make horror movies so exasperating to watch. I just refuse to believe that people are that stupid. The first movie, on the other hand had the two victims pretty much acting intelligently and being out thought was what made the first movie so terrifying.

A number of years before the events on this film, Otis had been taking his mistress to the motel. He later got his senses back and settled down with his christian wife.

He and Gordon, then reached the usually unspoken yet mutually beneficial good neighbour agreement that none of them would let on what knew about each other.

It didn't seem very surprising to me that Otis behaved the way he did.

It's clearly Smith the psycho becoming restless at how the plan's unfolding, that moves the story forward by shooting the couple.
