An Entertaining But Depressing Movie

I know Last Vegas was supposed to be a light-hearted comedy and nothing too deep but at times during the movie I felt bad for the elderly and the way they're treated in a society where being young is almost everything.

What I liked about the movie was the talented cast. Each one of them had their moments. But it was kind of sad seeing how all four of the main characters have aged. I do remember Michael Douglas and Robert DeNiro being nice looking guys in their prime (no homo).

But the worst part was realizing how old people, who've worked hard and now want to enjoy their golden years, are expected to stay in their place and pretty much be treated like children who're too weak to care themselves on their own. Can't look at a young woman even though she's wearing a bikini, can't go out and party, without being out of place. In real life that's what's expected of the elderly. Play with the grandkids and stay home.

I know I'm looking way too much into this but I guess it struck home with me because I've been to Las Vegas three times and each time I've gone I've seen men like the ones in this movie, only they're not enjoying themselves that much. All of us will be old one day unless we die young, but there isn't much to do for fun when you get that old. And if you're not already married by then, the chances are you're not going to meet a hot 60 year old woman like the one Billy ended up with.

Still this wasn't a bad movie.

To be honest I found it a lil’ bit depressin’ myself, but that’s because I ain’t gettin’ any younger ya’ know and I remember these actors in their prime back when I was a young and nimble teenager! I loved Morgan Freeman ever since I heard that golden voice of his narrate “The Shawshank Redemption”—one of my all time favorite films! So seeing how old these stars of the screen from my youth have gotten made me feel a bit low too. And making me feel even more flat is the likelihood I'll never have the opportunity to travel the USA, including Vegas. But, what got to me the most, though, was Billy’s poignant line towards the end:

Uh...I’m old. You know?...We were 17...you know, five minutes ago; it was just yesterday. I just don’t know where it all went, you know? My brain cannot conceive...how old this body is.

*sigh* I know that feeling all too well! I’ve always felt like an eighteen year old trapped in an ever older body that’s falling apart all around me. And I can't go back to the days of my youth knowing what I know now and make wiser choices. I guess no matter how different we are on the outside we all very much feel the same all too human emotions on the inside. Whether rich or poor, black or white, young or old. And I guess even in Hollywood no one stays young forever *sigh*

Some parts are quite serious, but most of the best comedies have moments that make you stop and think or a combination of serious and humorous moments. I didn't think it was too depressing, though. Also, they may be older but I don't think any of the main leads are any less good looking. They're all still attractive men, they're just a bit older. Plus, the phrase 'no homo' is one of the cringiest phrases ever! Seriously, you don't need to add that after saying another man is good looking.

May I ask why you have a problem with the playing with the grandchildren part?

reply

Maybe because the grandchildren can cause a ruckus at least when they're really young, but otherwise I agree with your point.

Can't sugar coat it. Getting old sucks.
