Why do they make older people in movies so culturally retarded?

Just because someone is over 60+ doesn't mean they've been in a closet for the last 20 years. I don't get that any of them wouldn't know who 50 cent is, or I am sure any of the other stupid 'I am so old I can't relate to xy or z'. Even the line party like its 1950 is bizarre these guys were toddlers or not even born yet then.

I think it's totally believable they don't know who 50 Cent is. Do you think they're watching MTV or listening to top 40 radio stations? My parents are over 60 and have no idea who 50 cent is, and they are well-versed with technology too.

reply

My mother is 52 and she has no idea who 50 cent is!

reply

I'm 52. I know there is someone named 50 cent, and I know he is a rapper. What he Raps/Sings about is where I am joyously ignorant.

I'm younger than that and I don't know nor do I want to know who 50 cent is.

reply

Had you at least heard his moniker prior to the movie?

My folks never knew who fitty cent is and have forgotten who Roy Orbison was.

reply

Kind of the same with me. I know Fitty Cent is a rapper, but I don't listen to rap so I couldn't ID any of his songs. And I'm in my 30s.

By the way, I'm not sure this is an old/young thing. I also detest C&W music and I couldn't name a one of those people. I'm real into actors and political commentators, though.

Please put some dashes above your sig line so I won't think it's part of your dumb post.

reply

Same with me, I looked up fitty cents when the name came up in a movie, but otherwise these rap stars aren't on my cultural radar at all. I just don't like their music.

reply

My parents raised me late in their lives, but their age group's music (the heavy metal & classic rock from the 50s to 80s) was put into my head too early. If you get use to that, rap & hip hop just doesn't cut it as much and for me, like you said, culturally I just never soaked it up like over half my classmates did. Same went for death metal on the opposite side of the spectrum, culturally just never hit in my radar either.

reply

I'd be really curious in a visualization of early exposure to music and preferences in style and certain qualities of music. I know I loved these terrible kid songs at one point in my life hahaha and then horrible country / folk music when I was like 6 or 7.

reply

I'm with your mom. I also have no idea who 50 cent is. Someone named their child 50 cent? Oh, good grief!

reply

Hell no, his real name is Curtis Jackson. He's an African American rapper who has been doing albums for the last 20 years.

I don't listen to the songs, not my style, but I can pick out the players mostly from their acting roles, same with P-Diddy (Sean Combs formerly known as Pump Daddy) & Enimem (Marshall Bruce Mathers III), Ja Rule (Jeffrey Atkins II), Ice Cube (O'Shea Jackson).

reply

I haven't seen the film, so I assume all the leading men don't know who 50 Cent or other popular rappers are? If that is the case, it's only believable to an extent. Most Americans over the age of 55 are familiar with the "household names" in American pop culture. 50 Cent isn't just your random rapper, he had huge mainstream success in the USA and around the world. It would be hard for a non-rap fan to not have at least heard his name before or have heard a song of his (maybe they can't put an artists name to a song but still). I'm not sure about the media outside of the USA, but American media drills the names, personal history, and images of celebrities into our heads daily. My 65 year old father knows who 50 Cent is. He probably can't name a song, but he knows who the guy is.

reply

What if someone doesn't follow the media? Regardless of the location (US or not), that someone wouldn't have heard of 50 cent.

reply

exactly. my mom in her 80's knew who people in hollywood etc…because of all the repeated celebrity stories on the news.

reply

I honestly think they were all just *beep* with everyone.

reply

I'm 30 and wish I didn't. With possible exceptions of Common after seeing him do pretty well in Hell on Wheels, any movie with a rapper or wrestler gets an automatic eyebrow-raise from me.

reply

Age has little to do with it.

It's all about how tuned into pop culture a person is. Pop culture would have everyone believe that every youth gobbles it up. That's simply not the case.

And not being tuned into pop culture is anything but being culturally retarded. In general it would tend mean the opposite.

reply

It's funny because Robert Deniro starred in a movie with 50 cent.

"Hello, Sweetie..."

reply

I know who 50 Cent and I also know he's actually not worthy of my valuable listening time and I also know that anyone who thinks no one over 60 knows who he is a bigoted idiot who needs to broaden their subject knowledge before they run off at the mouth.

reply

All 4 of the main actors were born in the late 30's to the mid 40's, I think they have a good idea what the 50's were like.

reply

I'm 23 and I don't know who 50 cent is. Who is that?

reply

It's not a person. It's a coin!

reply

And a liar.

reply

My dad knows he is but only cause of the films with pacino and deniro.

reply

lol I actually think that's quite realistic. I showed my Mom the trailer (she's 61) and she didn't understand why that part was funny because she was like "...I don't know who 'fiddy' is either!"

reply

Seems like you are drawing the conclusion that when the writers represent one person of this age group a certain way, then we must conclude that they meant that all individuals of this demographic act this way.

Regardless, it is very common for older people to lose touch with the cultural zeitgeist - from ignorance of popular artists to hanging on to outdated services like yahoo, hotmail, "dumb" phones, etc - while the majority of the populous evolves. Have you never in your life experienced this?

reply

I have to say that this film, from the trailer, makes old people look stupid and pathetic the same way Nancy Meyers films makes older women look stupid and pathetic.

reply

I'm confused. Isn't 50 cent half a dollar?. Surely everybody knows that :/
